(Why) Americans Are Too Busy Reacting to Authoritarianism to Act Against It

We have become 'reactionaries, alarmed, shocked, baffled, outraged by the day’s latest terrible, events,mute recipients of tragedy, passive receptacles of our own demise, unable to discern the reason behind it all. If all that Americans can do is react to authoritarianism’s daily transgressions, each one a little more terrible & violent than the last, then it will surely win, because it is constantly pushing the bar down into the abyss. Authoritarianism is only the flood, not the storm. It’s the mechanism of collapse — but not the cause. One reason is that Americans don't listen to intellectual analysts, we hear pundits.  But, the job of a pundit is not to tell the truth — but to spin it.  We are trapped in reactionary cycles. Like most cycles, it gets harder to break every time because we are all are too busy desperately, furiously reacting to act.' It is sad and tragic.'
