Republicans are fighting a leftward electoral shift with voter suppression, Stacey Abrams told a South Florida audience Wednesday.
Abrams, a founder of Fair Fight Action, a voting rights organization, cited SB 7066, a 2019 Florida law that requires non-violent former felons to repay criminal justice debt imposed by a judge before they can register to vote. SB 7066 became law months after Florida voters changed their constitution to let returning citizens register after completing all terms of a sentence, including parole and probation.
The Miami Herald article also noted that SB 7066 'included a provision that requires college campuses have a minimum amount of non-permitted parking in order to host early voting centers. Critics believe that was an attempt to curb Florida’s increasing youth vote...'
