'The federal government has an important role in the support and advancement of science.  In addition to teaching science, teachers must teach the ethics of science, the importance of reaching conclusions based on evidence, and the necessity of excluding politics from the work of scientists.Science should be free of political influence. Decision making should not be based on partisanship.Yet, as science professor John Richard Schrock shows, politics have often intruded on decisions about which policies to fund and what to make public. He cites bad decisions over the years under both Republican and Democratic administrations. But nothing in the past equals the Trump administration’s open was against science. Trump has placed non-scientists into key roles, where they are able to suppress or manipulate scientific findings to satisfy his poitical base. '

"The Proposals for Reform Volume II: National Task Force on Rule of Law & Democracy focuses on the need to keep government science research free from partisan influence and the importance of filling senior governmental positions in scientific agencies with qualified people.

"This National Task Force is a non-partisan committee that includes former government officials under both Republican and Democratic administrations. Their long-standing experience with working on government and policy issues is apparent in the detailed violations of science ethics they describe and the 11 proposals they offer.

"This task force, formed by the Brennan Center for Justice, cites some violations of science norms going back to much earlier administrations. But under President Trump, the attack on science and the erosion of objective science research has led major world newspapers to declare the US government is conducting a "war on science".
