It's widely assumed that atheists, by definition, hate Christmas. And it's an assumption I'm baffled by. I like Christmas. Lots of atheists I know like Christmas. Sure, most of us would like for our governments to not be sponsoring religious displays at the holidays. Or any other time.  But it's not like all atheists are Grinchy McScrooges. Some atheists even like Christmas carols.

For some time now, I've been on the lookout for Christmas songs that I can sing entirely happily, without getting into annoying theological debates in my head.

So, with the help of my Facebook friends, I've compiled a list of Christmas songs that atheists can love unreservedly:

It is widely accepted that Christmas is an overlay on top of solstice celebrations. The winter solstice, being at a cold, dark part of the year, is a natural time for people to get together in a warm place with lots of food and good songs. Dump the commercial and religious stuff, and it is a wonderful, needed celebration.

This is from a song that does not fit your article but they are good words to keep in mind over the holidays:

Have yourself a merry merry Christmas
Have yourself a good time
But remember the kids who got nothin'
While you're drinkin' down your wine
