H uge news out of the NC Superior Court, where a three-judge panel (2 Ds, 1 R) unanimously ordered the GOP-dominated state legislature to redraw its state House and Senate maps before the 2020 elections. The court found the current maps to be partisan gerrymanders in violation of the state Constitution's Free Elections Clause, Equal Protection Clause, and Free Speech and Free Assembly Clauses.
The existing state legislative maps resulted in a 65-55 seat majority for the GOP in the state House, even after 2018's "Blue Wave" election when Ds received 51% of the votes statewide to the GOP's 49%. The state Senate is similarly gerrymandered in favor of Rs, as is NC's US House map in the closely divided state where Ds have held just 3 seats in the state's 13-seat Congressional delegation over the past decade.
