Millions of human artifacts circle the Earth. Models show, a new orbital catastrophe is growing probable. Mega-constellations of satellites are being put into orbit; 50 thousand new satellites will be serving the Internet in 10 years. Meanwhile, in the low exosphere, the environment continues to degrade. Many miles above Pittsburgh, a decommissioned telescope & a defunct military satellite missed each other by roughly 50 feet. A debris-cluster 6 hundred miles above sea level, gets 60 close calls every day. 100 miles beneath that cluster 18 of the most massive derelict objects in space, pass in close proximity daily! Last year a 3-ton intelligence satellite and an 8-ton rocket body—missed each other by just 95 yards. The collision would have created 200,000 bits of “lethal” shrapnel, too small for the military to track but capable of damaging spacecraft.
