In Spite of Amazon War Chest Used Against Her, Seattle Socialist Kshama Sawant declares victory

The District 3 race attracted national attention; business interests poured money into the contest as a referendum on the influence of companies like Amazon over Seattle City Council. Watch the above video to see why Amazon routed $1.5 million through the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce’s PAC  to combat Sawant. 

“It looks like our movement has won, and defended our socialist City Council seat against the richest man in the world,” Sawant said at a news conference, swiping at Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Sawant, a member of the Socialist Alternative party former tech worker, was elected 6 years ago as the first socialist on the Seattle council in 100 years. 

“We were up against a Goliath, there is no question about that,” Sawant told the Guardian. “When the billionaires have all the money, the power, the political clout on their side, it’s quite an adversary to go up against.”
