The caucuses, the 1st contest in the USA ahead of November's election, are Feb. 3. The editorial board invited candidates to meet at the Register's offices for interviews. 9 current candidates who have spent time campaigning in Iowa accepted the invitation, as did candidates who have left the race, and two Republicans who are challenging Trump as nominee in his party.
Staff, including editors and reporters responsible for political coverage, are a separate entity with no involvement in the Opinion section nor the endorsement process; their focus is on bringing objective news to Iowans. Candidates endorsed receive no special consideration in subsequent news coverage.
This is the 9th presidential cycle for which the Register is publishing an endorsement. Although the caucuses are a party-run operation, not a formal election, their influence on the development of the race is strong.
