U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison will not run in Minnesota’s special U.S. Senate election in 2018, according to a source close to the Minneapolis congressman.
Gov. Mark Dayton is expected to appoint Lt. Gov. Tina Smith to the Senate seat in question on Wednesday morning, and Smith is expected to announce she will run for the seat next year.
Ellison, their fellow Democrat, had earlier signaled that he would consider the Senate race next year. But a source familiar with his thinking told the Star Tribune he’d taken it off the table.
The special election next year could also draw a big name on the Republican side, with former Gov. Tim Pawlenty’s name in the mix.
