Proving once again that the Chinese model of cooperation works better than the American model of confrontation, China and the Philippines look set to agree on joint development of oil & gas riches around Scarborough Shoal (the issue of throwing yet more fossil fuels in a global warming world will have to wait for another day, perhaps when Scarborough Shoal and the Spratley Islands are hopelessly under a rising sea).

Remember when a war in the South China Sea seemed almost inevitable?  Now, maybe not, but it looks like the American-Philippine alliance is a casualty, with a new Philippine president, Rodrigo Duterte, who has said 'Obama can go to Hell.'
