The union hasn’t endorsed any Democratic presidential hopefuls. Its one-pager seemed to blunt Sanders’ momentum, prompting backlash online. Its circulation coincides with fears among party establishment about putting a self-declared democratic socialist and Medicare for All proponent atop the ticket. The group has 60,000 members from Las Vegas and Reno’s hospitality industry, one of NV’s largest health care consumers: it doubled down on its criticism amid the outcry from the senator’s supporters.

“It’s disappointing that Senator Sanders’ supporters have attacked the Culinary Union because our union has provided facts on what health care proposals might do to take away the system of care we have built over 80 years,” noting that Sanders had participated in Culinary town halls and toured the union’s facilities.

Comment by Rob Kall:

My take, and that of many on Twitter, is that it's not the union members who oppose Medicare for all. it's the union leaders who sell union membership based on benefits, with their healthcare program being a big one. If Bernie delivers a better program then they've lost one of the biggest carrots luring workers to union membership.
