Before we sanctify Pope Francis (at least in wholly positive American political terms), let us digest what it means for the Pope to endorse Kim Davis' deranged, lawless defiance of settled federal law.  It is one thing for the Pope to challenge gay marriage; it is another to endorse the kind of secessionist lawbreaking that comes about when a government official defies the law.  This is not civil disobedience but contempt for our system and now the Pope has aligned himself with someone who holds our democratic system in contempt.  That doesn't take away his other strong suits but it puts in context a Church which has AT LEAST one regressive move for every "progressive" or "socialist" inclination.
