'Jews are being attacked on the streets of New York. New Yorkers can’t stand for that. What is called for now is a mass show of solidarity and rejection of anti-Semitism, which is among the oldest, most insidious hatreds on the planet.'Of 421 hate crimes reported in NYC in 2019, more than half were directed at Jews. The 1st Jewish congregation in the US Shearith Israel , was founded in 1654 by Jews who emigrated from Brazil. Some Jews arrived in the late 1800s and the early 20th century, Others came around the time of WW2--seeking refuge from the horrors of the Holocaust.  New York has been indelibly shaped by their presence. And yet now, some would claim that Jews are no longer welcome, that they do not belong. To protect all of us, New York needs to show up against anti-Semitism. We need to march in the streets, together.'

I live in Wesley Hills/Pomona, at the very edge of Monsey, among the sweet families whose children play on the lawns, and who walk to temple on Friday nights through our wooded suburb-- so I turn on my driveway lights.

There have been 13 different anti-Semitic incidents here.

I am scared to go to the kosher supermarket that replaced Grand Union decades ago.

I write about UC--the Unintended Consequences of unprecedented information technology that has never existed before! This ERA in our world has been transformed by information technology which began with television, but now offers access to a place where anarchy reigns. Cyber-space!

Yes, cyberspace allows us to write here, to express our thoughts, ideas and our opinions. BUT...i t also allows E-CHAN and the haters -- all those 'fine people' who marched in Charlottesville to come together, so that the 'Jews will never" rule them.

It gives our Tweeter-In-Chief-- an activity to do while he watches tv. Trump Slammed For Insisting 'Killer' Real Estate Jews Will Back Him To Save Their Wealth This is Trump's America, where he rallies like this. Behavior tells all about any human being; so, it should come as no surprise, then, that violent hate crimes against other Americans black, Hispanic, Muslim, transgender, impoverished and homeless, have also been on the rise in recent years.

But he is not alone on Twitter --"Steve King (R-Iowa) promoted a far-right influencer with a history of Holocaust denial and anti-immigrant bigotry, who once tweeted, "Hitler had some good points. I think the Holocaust never actually happened."

I have a 92 year old cousin who was 16 when they came for her -- and burned those numbers onto her arm.

Will they come for my 16 yearly granddaughter in Texas, or my 17 year old granddaughter in New Jersey, or my 21 year old grandson in Michigan

... or will they come for ME, next.

Yes, as the article says,"To protect all of us, New York needs to show up against anti-Semitism. We need to march in the streets, together;" but we also need to grasp the far-reaching effects of this moment. Such attacks reflect growing anti-Semitic sentiment in the U.S. and Europe. Jewish communities being forced to adapt are in some cases forced to make stunning decisions, the Holocaust historian Deborah Lipstadt writes.in December alone. Jews, she writes, are going into hiding."

"Oy,vey!"

And this in my email, from the mayor of my village, which is next 'door' to Monsey

"I want to address the attack that took place on Forshay Road last Saturday night only 3 houses outside of Wesley Hills. I'm sure I was as shocked by you at this terrible crime and my thoughts and prayers go out to the victims.

"In response to the attack, I arranged a meeting yesterday between all the Mayors in Ramapo and Town officials, including Supervisor Specht and Police Chief Weidel. The purpose of the meeting was to gain an understanding of what the Town is doing to enhance security and what information should be communicated to the public concerning how to protect their institutions and themselves.

"The Town and Police department are taking several steps to enhance security including:

  • Hiring additional Police Officers including veteran officers from other departments.
  • Enhancing visibility of Police at sensitive locations.
  • Upgrading dispatch software and systems to add GPS capability to reduce response times. The response time for this attack was only 2 minutes.
  • Conducting active shooter drills.
  • Purchasing a smart panic button system with video and 2-way communication capability to be installed at schools, religious institutions and businesses throughout the Town.
  • Installing a license plate reader systems to ring the Town and allow for determining where suspect vehicles entered or left the Town.
  • Town Police along with New York State Police will be conducting an assessment of every yeshiva and religious institution in the Town.

"The Town Police advise residents of the following":

  • When you see something, say something.
  • Call immediately, later is too late.
  • The more information you can provide, the better. Plate numbers, people or vehicle descriptions are important. Photos or video if possible are also very useful.
  • When you call 911 from a hardline, the call goes directly to the Ramapo Police.
  • When you call 911 from a cell phone, the call is routed through the County's system and you may be asked questions before your call is forward to the Ramapo Police. You can call the Ramapo Police directly at 845-357-2400.
  • If a facility has armed security on site, that information should be shared with the Ramapo Police. Please contact me for the name of the Officer you can contact at the Ramapo Police.
  • While institutions should manage security as they see fit, note that untrained, armed congregants could cause additional injuries.
  • People need to hold down the fort until the police arrive. Mr. Gluck was the hero of Saturday night, throwing furniture at the assailant, luring him outside and getting the plate number. His heroic actions likely reduced the number of injuries and saved lives.

Wow. This post, down at the bottom of the daily--under the asteroid post, and after endless links to Trump's latest!

But anti-semitism is on the rise... and this story deserved attention!
