For all concerned about education, this Santa Fe New Mexican editorial is important.
Most encouraging in the hearing was Education Secretary Karen Trujillo’s understanding of schools' needs to provide services (health care, food, social work, even clothing). The educational system can't improve unless children are in their seats able to learn. That’s no excuse for low performance, but children in the state need greater support. Recognition of that is at the heart of the successful lawsuit over whether New Mexico is funding education sufficiently to meet constitutional mandates. Plaintiffs persuaded a judge that the state is failing. Trujillo’s charge is to take the judge’s findings as a result of that lawsuit and direct money to where it will do the most good, especially to children at risk when they arrive at the school doors.
