Alhabash said these scandals are bound to influence some people, but not the majority. While people generally understand that their private information is vulnerable, they don't completely comprehend the risks. That skews the cost-benefit calculation people make when they ask themselves, 'What am I going to lose by being off Facebook, and what am I gaining by being on Facebook?'

Facebook's value lies in the fact that it is the world's largest social network. Even though many would be willing to pay for the service, if Facebook started charging for access, a large number would quickly move to another social network.

People should also be asked, would they be more ready to abandon Facebook, if they knew they could be doing everything they do with Facebook, on another platform, without giving away their privacy, data, or security, and without being censored, for the same price they're (not) paying for Facebook?

It's a question that better addresses the current reality. Food for thought.

People are way to stupid to think of such things.

Maybe so, but when enough of them experience censorship and see an exodus of people from Facebook, they'll follow. :)

Facebook made a mistake becoming an arm of the State, and they can fall quicker than they rose up. Same with Google, Twitter, and a few others.

Once encrypted services become the standard, every one of the big players who built their empires on data exploitation and central control will not be able to continue, as they will no longer be making any money.

I didn't create a FB account till late 2014 and only did so at the request of an extended family member to post old photos of China I digitized, and donated that are now on display at the local city museums related to them there. (.facebook.com/groups/638739869575987/), this is my website related to them: .chinamissions.com/

I was surprised at how many of my high school classmates, friends and relatives were on FB and received requests to be "friends." It was nice to re-acquaint myself with these people and catch up on their lives and activities. It was the easiest way to communicate with them since I was half-a-world away at the time.

Now, I find myself unfollow/block/unfriending some of them since they post things I find offensive, can't respectively reason with their blind affiliation to a political party, and other things.

FB is the only social media account I possess and sometimes wonder why I created an account in the first place? It's not public, don't provide personal information and try to limit my posts/comments to things I think important.

Yes, I'd be willing to give up my FB account if my "friends" would be willing to move to another media that doesn't sell your info and use it to market advertising towards you and other aspects of FB I don't utilize.
