I'm sure this is a question that many have pondered, even resolved. A lady I once knew, another 'back to the lander,' a I was at the time, had done much homework and came up with something like one acre (I was living on an adjacent five acres at the time). This was in southeast Idaho, where the farmers used to joke, 'I ain't greedy! I jes want the land that's next to mine!' (Possibly a good and correct motto for many Americans today, if not America itself).
So here is a short story by Leo Tolstoy, in English, that will likely be of interest to anyone who's pondered this question (though a 'short story,' it is a long article). But in the end it does resolve the question with considerable finality. An entertaining read if that's what you're in the mood for.
