 'There’s an especially toxic form of American exceptionalism —  believing that in a society which abuses more or less everyone vulnerable in terrible ways — kids being made to do “active shooter drills”, poor people left to die without insulin, elderly people working for the world’s richest man instead of being allowed to retire, and so on — that women, too, aren’t especially likewise abused. If everyone else is relentlessly and systemically abused by American culture, society, institutions — why should we believe that American women are any different? American women (too many of them) believe that the systemic abuse they suffer is normal — but is that really true? Or is America an especially bad place to be a woman?'
