These Media reports which focus on reassuring Tourists that 'Hawaii' remains open and available do Not tell the story of the ongoing volcanic eruptions in lower Puna. If you really want to know, or if you have friends and family in East Hawaii Island, subscribe to Big Island Video News, or go to their Facebook page. It is updated 2 or 3 times a day, depending on what Pele is doing.

Yesterday, she joined hands with Vulcan to fight off Neptune's attempt to quench her fires by inundating us with torrential rain storms. Today, the Trade Winds are returning, allowing us to share the VOG with Big Island Residents and Visitors, in Kona and Kau.

Despite the storms yesterday, Mayor Harry Kim opened Pohoiki Surfing Beach to Locals only. If the rains had slacked off, I was going to take Leo for a visit - But they didn't. Today the Lava has crossed the road, and that Beach is isolated unless you decided to not evacuate.

The Videos are awe-inspiring: Lava just keeps fountaining into the air - sometimes 200' high, and pouring down hill at 100-800 yards an hour. This is destructive of many cherished locations and communities, beautiful beaches and gentle Warm Ponds - but it is also creating new Land, new Beaches, and new bulwarks against the rising water of the Pacific Ocean.

As I tell friends, "Living in East Hawaii is one of the few places where all of us are really Older than Dirt!" Composting is not some fad for the newly awakened Environmentalist - It is a necessity if I want to plant a tree or put in a garden!
