Alert! "More than 35 % of charter schools funded by the federal Charter School Program either never opened or were shut down, costing taxpayers more than half a billion dollars, according to a new report, titled “Still Asleep at the Wheel,” which reviewed records of nearly 5,000 schools." " The disbursement of over one billion dollars during the program’s first decade was never monitored for its impact or results. There is no record of which schools received the funds. "537 'ghost schools' never opened but received more than $45.5 million in federal start-up funding--which is 11% of all the schools." An excerpt: 'How the Federal Charter Schools Program Results in a Pileup of Fraud and Waste,' takes up where our first report left off; it provides detailed information, state by state, on how federal dollars were doled out to schools that no longer exist or never existed at all."
