2,800 children were separated from parents last summer; Federal Judge Dana Sabraw's ruling includes familes torn apart in the past 2 years after concluding that 1000's more children were separated before 2018. DHS didn't respond to questions about how many have been split up from children. Legal guardians have to wait longer to see their children again. “They are the functional equivalent of parents,” said Joshua Toll, attorney representing 2 guardians.
