In my run for U.S. Senate against Utah's Orrin Hatch, I posted many progressive ideas and principles that I internalized over the years. I'm leaving that site up indefinitely, since it describes what I believe most members of our species truly (more...)

I find it often difficult to find the news about these events, but in brief I'd say the future is here, though barely starting, and the powers that be are generally too afraid to show them.

The .0001% have responded to create havens with secure water and plenty of land so they can have self sufficient feudal estates. The Bush family, not sharpest, recently acquired 300,000 acres in Uruguay over the Guarani Aquifer, the largest fresh water reservoir in the world. Thats a square of land 24 miles by 24 miles.

20 or so years ago scientists studying 3 million year old corals found evidence of sea level rise of as much as 10 meters in 10 years. That can only happen if the Anarctic and Greenland ice sheets slide rapidly into the ocean. If everybody knows what is coming there will be less land available that is above 220 ft elev. That is the potential and probable sea rise in the next century. The road bed of the Golden Gate Bridge would be under 20ft.

Many of us codgers are sanguine because we think we will be dead. Maybe not and your grandkids certainly won't be. Consider the consequences of 100 Fukushimas. That is the minimum situated on the coasts.

I fear it's even worse and is closer to a hair's breath away, based on the latest from Paul Beckwith and a report in Nature Magazine. Hoping to post those today or tomorrow.

I have zero desire to live in the world that is almost here, politically and sans species and habitat. Let the billionaires in their bunkers live in that world, eating canned SPAM for a few more years (SPAM, as I learned in Boy Scouts = scrambled penises and mastectomies).

Don't forget the 450+ nukes that will melt down when there is no one to operate them, releasing enough ionizing radiation to take out the ozone, aka letting UV take out all life, save maybe a few mutated bacteria.

My heart bleeds for my grandson and countless others. We were handed Paradise and turned it into Hell.

There are things that McPherson and Beckwith have not taken into consideration as far as I can tell. They account for the warming effect of vapor in the atmosphere but do not account for the albedo of the increased clouds and snow cover. The sea ice is gone and a huge heat bomb is released. Methan vaporizes and sea levels rise. All that is baked into the system. There will be particulate loss but there will also be the loss of agriculture and a drastic population reduction. When the fields are abandoned they will go to weeds and the grazing animals and small herbivores will become abundant again along with their predators and insects will become abundant again. It happened before in the Little Ice Age when temps dropped 1C because of the rebirth of grasslands and forests when 95-98% of humans died and quit planting corn.

here & here & here written by Betty Friedan in 58.

Granted recovery will take a long time and many people will suffer and die, but the species will survive. The air and water masses of the North and South do not mix much. That is why the Bushes and most of the .00001% have havens in the South that are hidden. They know the pitchfords will be coming. Of course the radiation could be so pervasive that even the South will not escape but who knows?

IMO, 2 + 2 = near term human extinction. I see no serious alternative. 2T galaxies, 1T srtars/ galaxy. Ask Marianne Williamson for a better answer.
