We're in a watershed moment for public education. Trump's most significant move away from public education is in the expansion of school vouchers—a direct transfer of public money to private schools Their commitment persists despite the idea's sordid racial history, opposition from the civil rights community, constitutional problems, and research which does not support their claims about higher test scores or better education. Julian Vasquez Heilig dissects the claims,  posing 8 questions about vouchers that DeVos cannot or will not ever answer. Trump has committed to spending $20 billion on market-based school choice, including charter schools and vouchers. "Today we have the unprecedented phenomenon of a U.S. Secretary of Education who advocates for a policy that will produce ever higher levels of segregation. This is wrong" Diane Ravitch says.
