Trump on the Couch by Justin A. Frank

Untreated hyperactive tendencies create a whole cycle of problems. ' This is Trump. It limits not only his intellectual development, but these problems mean that as an adult he also can’t listen to other people. He can’t think properly.  Because Trump does not understand, he therefore has to retreat to name-calling or going to his base to whip up a frenzy of activity. Donald Trump on a fundamental level does not understand complex issues. This is why Donald Trump always says things such as, “I have the best words,” or “I’m the smartest person, I know things other people don't.' Together such comments signal something extremely disturbing... Donald Trump is erotically attached to violence... Trump is unable to manage anxiety. Therefore, he cannot help the American people manage their anxiety.' (From an interview with Justin Frank, author of 'Trump on the Couch.')

No, Trump is the flashing red light that has finally alerted the readers of mainstream news organs about a crisis that has been unfolding since Reagan. The worst of what Trump is doing was already shocking innovation by Bush the Younger, certified as bipartisan consensus by Obama. The US was a police state and the Presidency was a sham long before Trump took office.

Very true. Arguably the turning point was JFK's open challenge to the CIA and pentagon, and his consequent assassination. Since then, the police state has moved steadily to consolidate its power, e.g., with the non-legal indefinite military detentions authorized by the 2012 NDAA signed by Obama. Under the police state, the function of the retained trappings of democracy, including the presidency, is to keep the citizens peacefully slumbering. But being the loose canon that he is, Trump has troubled us by dislodging some of the camouflage of what has so far been "soft fascism" for many years. (I don't mean 'fascism' as an insult but rather in its technical meaning - look it up!)

What next? real resistance to the police state? Undisguised "hard fascism"? Interesting times indeed.
