Democrats' push for impeachment really is gaining steam - but they may have already made a fatal mistake

Cody Fenwick: Easier to say the president should be impeached for committing criminal obstruction of justice, based on evidence in the Mueller report, than to say that defying congressional subpoenas is impeachable. The 1st argument is a application of the principle that no one is above the law. The 2nd rests on a much more arcane authority about the division of powers in the U.S. government~ difficult to believe this will grip the attention of a skeptical electorate. By letting the opportunity of the Mueller report pass them by, the Democratic Party may have wasted the best chance it at effectively flexing the impeachment powers. The House may still come around to the idea, but it may be too late to do much good. If they’re going to convince the public that impeachment is worth it, it will be an uphill battle, and many in the party don’t seem to have the will to take on this fight.

There are no grounds for impeaching Trump. None at all. It is a hollow fantasy to think otherwise. There has to be a sound reason to bring impeach proceedings, and the Mueller Report spelled out unequivocally that there was no collusion between the Trump campaign (or anyone associated with it) and the Russians.

"No collusion" means no crime. And no crime means no potential for obstruction--which would be the only legitimate grounds for impeachment, anyway, since collusion, in and of itself, constitutes no punishable crime. I don't get why is this so difficult for so many people to understand.

Democrats continue to threaten impeachment for one reason, and one reason only: As a public-relations stunt designed to reinforce the belief in those who are still foolish enough to follow the lying mainstream media that Trump has committed some act worthy of impeachment. He hasn't. The Mueller Report's conclusions were eminently clear on that point.

From a political standpoint, going through with impeachment proceedings would equate to certain suicide, as there is no way that two-thirds of the Senate would vote to remove Trump from office...

Instead, it would guarantee his re-election. If not, you can believe that Pelosi, Schumer, Schiff and Nadler would have pushed for impeachment weeks ago. Their butts--and those of many of their colleagues--are in a sling right now, and they all know it very well.

They've been hollering impeachment since before Trump was sworn in. Pelosi heads up a party of criminals and/or political dinosaurs and all they can do is attack without any ammunition.

I'm sure Pelosi will experience no piques of conscience in gathering up her ill-gotten gains, Nelson. Spending them may prove more difficult, though, given her complicity in myriad crimes against the U.S. Constitution that will soon come to light.

San Francisco itself has become a grim monument to the legislative failures of politicians like Nancy Pelosi and Dianne Feinstein. If Jonestown represented an example of blowback from the CIA's Summer of Love, a daytime stroll through the streets of San Francisco these days clearly illustrates its wreckage.

That traitorous leeches like Pelosi, Feinstein, Kamala Harris, and Jerry Brown had no compunction about growing wealthy on the backs of people subjected to such a catastrophe, speaks volumes about some of the Democratic Party leadership.

Of course, L.A.--where Adam Schiff and Maxine Waters hold court--is hardly an improvement.

Totally agree, Dennis. The issue is that Pelosi, et al., always knew that there was no there there with alleged Trump-Russia collusion. If nothing else, Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee Adam Schiff would have let the Democratic Party hierarchy in on the dark secret: Namely, that the Obama administration had begun conducting NSA inquiries, through four outside contractors, to engender illegal spying on political opposition members way back in THE SUMMER OF 2012. Then-Director of National Intelligence Admiral Mike Rogers sussed this out, and subsequently brought it to the attention of Rosemary Collyers, who is now the judge presiding over the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.

Key Democrats, then, knew unequivocally that the entire Trump-Russia collusion narrative was an attempt at covering up illegal surveillance that had begun more than four years before the 2016 election. Rather than owning up to their crimes and attempting to cultivate a solid candidate with the best interests of American voters in mind since 2016, Democrats have doubled down on a heinous and utterly shameful lie.

I believe Pelosi does not want to proceed with impeachment because of that being a huge can of worms exposing many others, including herself. That was also a reason she took impeachment off the table with Bush.

Right. Pelosi only appears stupid. There does seem to be something physical afflicting her these days, but she's still a cagey professional politician.

Were it left to upstarts like AOC, Tlaib, Oman and others of that ilk... or those less savvy from a political standpoint--Maxine Waters, Sheila Jackson Lee or Corey Booker, for instance--impeachment likely would be underway.

Say what you want about Pelosi, but she knows how to play the game. Schumer, too.
