Democratic Socialists of America hits 25,000 members: why this could mark a political turning point

Salon: Red-bait all you want, but the Democratic Party owes its existence to the radicals who pushed it left. In the past week, a small online war erupted between Democratic Party stalwarts and Bernie Sanders supporters. Peter Daou is wrong when he says that Berniecrats are hijacking the party. Indeed, the Berniecrats’ predecessors — call them Eugene Debsocrats if you must — made the party what it is. Saying that Berniecrats are ruining the Democratic Party is like saying Rock and Roll was ruined by R&B — when in reality, it evolved from it. The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) just surpassed 25,000 active members —up from about 8,000 members in a year. This makes the DSA the largest socialist group  in the United States since the 1940s.
