For the past 21 years, I have had the high privilege of holding a White House press pass, a magical ticket that gives the bearer a front-row seat to history.

But no more. The White House eliminated most briefings and severely restricted access to official events.  After covering four presidents, I received an email informing me that Trump’s press office had revoked my White House credential. I’ll keep covering the White House and wait for things to return to normal — if they ever do.

Columbia Journalism Review: "In his recent blog post on "the actual ideology of the American press," NYU professor Jay Rosen identified Dana Milbank the extravagantly contrarian columnist for The Washington Post as "one the most extreme ideologues in the business." The label fit, Rosen explained, because of Milbank's insistence on characterizing political debate as consisting of two unreasonable poles, and himself as a truth-teller caught in the middle, a posture so habitual and inflexible that it has become an ideology." This is a surprisingly similar to the description of the content of OpEdNews. The White House is not obligated to include everyone who claims to be a journalist.

Don't sweat it Dana. I've written about the White House for years, most recently my cover story in the Nation on the Pentagon's 20-years-plus epic accounting fraud, published last December, and have never had a press pass. It's not an honor, it's a contract. You don't need it.

Izzy Stone never needed one. You just go to press briefings and get lied to. Trump's not the first to do that.

Develop your sources, dig into the documents, and rip the s**t out of the Executive branch the old-fashioned way. You'll be all the better for it.

Your colleagues Woodward and Bernstein didn't get their big story by attending White House press briefings, remember.
