US Capitol Police Officer Byron Evans battled violent rioters that day. US Capitol Police Sgt. Aquilino Gonell was beaten with a flagpole and later required surgery and said he thought he was going to die. Both Evans and Gonell say they've struggled with the aftermath of the riots, with some Republicans opposing a commission to investigate what happened to them and downplaying the attack itself, even comparing the rioters to normal tourists. "I got hurt protecting them. And I would do it again if I have to. It's my job," he added. "It's inconceivable that they don't even want to find out how to prevent this in the future."
