An artist, Oriel, was displaying his art in Washington Sq, NYC when he was approached by Park Enforcement Patrol who wanted him to remove his art. He refused, they then moved to arrest him. Three PEP tackle him for what seems like forever–video was immediately posted on YouTube.Another “White shirt” moved in and accelerated the struggle, forcing him to the ground. This, by the way, is while all the time park goers are watching, filming, walking by. Eventually, the NYPD came and Oriel was arrested and taken away.

This all occurred due to the ridiculous rule, implemented in 2018, that art and music for sale at Washington Square Park must be on a table, not on the ground.

The video is very disturbing to watch and this all occurred, it appears, due to the ridiculous rule, implemented in 2018, that art and music for sale at Washington Square Park must be on a table, not on the ground.

What a great country! The criminals get to wear uniforms and collect pay checks.

Artists walk a thin line in the US. Our job is to be subversive - but that is best exercised in the work rather than in police confrontation. The cops were way out of line.... but...In his situation I would have smiled and found a table as requested. The justice system is stacked against all of us. The most prudent course is to avoid it at all costs and let the work do the resisting. Depending on the judge, he could end up in Rikers for God knows how long awaiting trial. not worth the risk.
