Democrats can use their new power in the House to check the Trump administration’s recklessness.

Democrats should send a message to the world that we stand by our democratic values. Congress can make its voice heard in reaffirming our commitments, funding for the State Department, pressing the administration to admit more refugees and providing support for independent civil society and media around the world.

This is vital at a moment when Russia and China are offering the world an alternative, authoritarian path. Democrats should pursue legislation defending  our democracy against foreign meddling, protects our elections and our  infrastructure against cyberattacks, and increases funding for combating state-sponsored disinformation. This is not about politics; it’s about the health and resilience of our democracy, and our capacity to support other beleaguered democracies.

No such country called "America".

It's the USA...one part of The Americas.

The name certainly has been hijacked, hasn't it?

I'm Canadian, and I always try to use the title "U.S." when talking about the country itself, but I do admit to using the term "Americans" without thinking. I blame this on years of hearing everyone in the U.S. (from all levels) using the name "America".

Hearing stuff like, "American values", "Truth, justice, and the American Way", "Project for a New American Century", "America the Beautiful", and "The American national anthem" doesn't help with the average person's understanding of this.

Got it? The term is "vernacular" as in "common usage."

I get that, but I also think John has a certain point that gets discarded in the process. Just because a term is vernacular, doesn't make it correct, or appropriate.

For instance, I wouldn't actually call a German a "Kraut", as I think the term has derogatory roots.

John does raise an interesting question. Why does the "States" get to "bastardize" a name that applies to a whole continent, effectively "monopolizing" its usage?

Technically, as a Canadian, I *could* call myself "American" (agreed, this is a real stretch), but on the other hand, now that the term has been so vernacularized, I'd rather disassociate myself with it. :)
