Bill McKibben, one of the world's foremost ecological activists and environmental writers organized the biggest Demonstration in history-- 5200 demonstrations in 181 countries, according to CNN. This podcast interview discusses the details of why he did it, how he and his team made it happen and what's next. (a global work party set for Oct 10, 2010-- that's 10http://www.opednews.com/populum//10http://www.opednews.com/populum//10-- McKibben believes in using numbers that stand out.) He describes it,Â

"This year, instead of doing a global political rally, it's more of a global work party. In thousands of places throughout the world, people will be digging community gardens, putting up solar panels, laying out bike paths, not because we think we can fix climate change one bike path at a time. We can't. We know that we need global and national political action to re-set the price of carbon. But besides being good things all by themselves-- all those wind turbines, solar panels and community gardens-- will send a pointed political message or so we hope. What we'll be telling politicians is "we're getting to work. How about you?"

McKibben created a website, www.350.org, explaining, "it's a huge global grassroots climate campaign. It draws its curious name from the number that scientists tell us is the most carbon  we can safely have in the atmosphere-- 350 parts per million. Above that, say the NASA team headed by Jim Hanson, we can't have a planet similar to that on which civilization developed to which life on earth is adapted  And that's a big problem, because we're already well past that-- we're at 390 parts per million.Â

"Indeed, the Arctic is melting, indeed, the ocean has grown about 30 percent more acid and indeed, the atmosphere is wetter, which means we're seeing incredible astonishing rise in deluge downpour and flood. Â Our planet-- we've left the benign holocene where we spent the last 10,000 years and now we're seeing something else that's very tough and will only get tougher unless we take very quick action to get ourselves off fossil fuel."
