We may have competed head-to-head in life and never knowingly taken advantage of skin color but that doesn’t mean we haven’t profited from being white. The built in bias toward white male middle-to-upper-class means every time someone looks at us we get a pass. (Or a partial pass if you’re female like me).
And no, there is too much injustice in the world to guilt-trip about it, but facing facts might help heal the wounds of centuries! In the ancient world being a slave just meant you lost the last war- not that your progeny would be subservient for generations.
Hooking up class to skin color has to be one of the most evil constructs ever devised by mankind. And for every population held down, there is at least one that is held up.
I’m not telling you to do anything about it. But I am telling you that your unique human value will not be increased by some perk from slaveholders long ago, and your soul will not be weighed with more credit because you happened to be born white. You might however get credit for honestly observing how much you unknowingly benefited from that accident.
