By all accounts, it looked like Milo Yiannopoulos -- everyone's favorite self-loathing gay alt-right provocateur -- was going to have himself a really good weekend.
Real Time with Bill Maher turned out to be a cake walk. Sure, he got trounced by two out of three of its participants, but that's all in a day's work for one who provokes! Doubtless he ate up the fire and outrage his nonsense created, as that's just more grist for his dark, satanic mill.
But there's a problem with weekends -- sooner or later, they end. And then, come Monday, the real world takes its toll.
That toll came today, when a certain podcast came to international attention. In it, Milo appears to be condoning certain kinds of Pedophilia. And that, apparently, was too much for his high-rolling conservative admirers and backers to handle.Milo's trying to cover his behind, of course. No, he wasn't condoning anything. Of course Pedophilia is wrong! He was just.... well... talking. That's what he does, right?
But let's consider something for a moment or two.
It goes without saying that his conservative fans have no problem with his dislike of feminism, Islam, and poor people. But he also says things about Jews that are almost indistinguishable from neo-nazis. And there's a lot more, even nastier things floating around out there -- snippets of thought that reveal what might be sociopathy, if not just utter disdain for the kind of people conservatives claim to really care about. Really.
But isn't it interesting that his conservative fans were willing to cheer, overlook, or even ignore so much, until the faint whiff of child-molestation went up their noses?
It's almost as if it's okay to be racist, sexist, anti-gay, woman-hating, Muslim-loathing, Jew-baiting, and goodness knows what else ... but asking if it's always a bad thing for kids under the age of consent to have relations with older folks?
Man, that's box office poison. And shame on him!
And shame on quite a few others, too.
