There are times in life when you remember an incident because of its uniqueness or unusualness or the prominence of a person you are lucky enough to meet. I met Senator Inouye early one morning in a DC hotel when we were both on our way to a hearing of the DNC Rules Committee in the summer of 1980, he as Chair and I as an unpaid assistant to a wild and wonderful member of the committee from the great state of New Jersey. It was a chance meeting for me with the unassuming Senator who I helped to carry some bags and received many more thanks than I deserved. He was smart and sure and focused and extraordinarily accessible in a time when politicians are too often filled to overflowing with ego. He was in Washington to represent the people of Hawaii and the business of the United States with honor which he did for some 50 years.  He will be missed!
