Okay, so we've had our laugh at the expense of the religiously addicted.
The problem is, they're still taking religion seriously, they're still frightened to the presumed core of their beings, and this fact, alone, makes them all extremely dangerous people.
Ignorance in the population is a hazard to everyone's health. Ignorance is a public health problem, folks, it's not just an education problem, a poverty problem or a political issue. People are making themselves sick with fear over such things as:
1. Obama is a Muslim
2. Obama is the Antichrist
3. The Rapture has already taken place and I've been left behind
4. Black people are evil and we have a black person as President
5. I'm afraid I'm losing my job and my family will starve, or one of us will become sick and die
6. People who say Bush lies are lying [then why do I feel afraid?]
7. I can't afford to drive to work anymore, or I can't afford to maintain my vehicle
8. I can't shake this flu and I'm losing hours at work [whether or not I'm a contract employee]
9. People around me are giving up on their faiths/religions; what's going to happen if Jesus doesn't return to save us from ourselves?
10. Obama is a Muslim
Someday this will be funny, but not today. People really are hurting from wounds which we have inflicted on ourselves.
Wound number one: we have ALLOWED ourselves to be OWNED by people we don't even know and who only think they know us.
To people of faith: if your God is, indeed, all-powerful and ever-living, you have NOTHING to be afraid of. Very literally. All the things which cause you fear and then bring out the worst in your behavior are, in fact, NOTHING. Your concerns are irrelevant. The only item or issue you have to concern yourselves with is your relationship with, and to, your Creator. So get off your self-pitying, anxious fannies and go help some people. People are starting to get cold and hungry. Winter is coming. Whatever you think the problems of society are, they aren't about YOU, personally. When in doubt, move to help somebody else to live and be happy one more day. People of no faith, or little faith, are not your problem...they merely show you your own shortcomings before you act to strengthen what you do not want.
To people of no faith: Your faith rests in what you perceive to be what is best about you. Fear has nothing to do with what's best for anyone. Harness your fear to bring people together, to work together, to form partnerships that will keep everyone alive and well. People with faith in a supreme being are merely placing their faith where it will do THEM the most good. Put your faith in what you can do, but never underestimate the power of humility, the power to be big enough to be no more conspicuous than a spot on the carpet or a fly on the wall -- or the savior of group sanity at just the right moment when a kind word or some useful experience is called for by someone in need.
To people of little faith: You must choose your side for your great faith rests only in your willingness to wait for others to become vulnerable to your incessant need to manipulate and control what is beyond your ability and your compact, to control. You will either evolve to serve those who have served you, or you will be devoured as "rats" become the only food that feeds a starving mass.
