I wonder what associations people have with the presidency of JFK today--those born well after his violent murder?

Younger people I converse with aren't too interested in life during the sixties, as revolutionary as it was. Issues today are harrowing, certainly.

But I was barely an adolescent when JFK was elected and what was new to me was the glamor of a president and his family--paparazzi fodder certainly; we followed their lives eagerly, devouring details at the human-interest level: Caroline's life that every little girl wanted and Jacqueline's glamor and her ideal marriage to the handsome knight" The adorable little boy playing in Daddy's office.

The media have dissected the facts and served us some disappointing postscripts and certainly tragedies that have afflicted the extended family. But there was a sparkle to life between 1960 and 1963, a new future, a youth cult asking what can be done for the country: energy and optimism: Jackie charming Khrushchev, Khrushchev tantrumming when authorities determined that it was unsafe for him to visit Disneyland.

POTUSes receive such merciless criticism, This one was, for many, the exception.

JFK's visions antagonized too many adversaries. They got together--evidence for this mounts by the day and the research is huge and convincing--and executed the abomination. And, some say, similar cadres of opposition did away with other icons who might have kept JFK's vision alive and more potent during subsequent decades: RFK, MLK, Malcolm X, and others.

Among those of us devastated by JFK's death, a renaissance rescued some. At the risk of seeming irreverent, I have to say that the Beatles revitalized youth and in many ways passed on JFK's torch just as LBJ, whom some implicate in the assassination, perpetrated his values by sponsoring the Great Society and civil rights legislation. The Beatles kept the fire lighted, which was amplified by youth's opposition to the Vietnam war and then the fervor of the hippies' massive rebellion against traditions, fire fueled by the subsequent assassinations.

Kids in college trying to export the idealism they were learning in class to the outside world in the form of human rights movements comprised a dream that has persisted, diluted and vigorously embattled. That opposition, of course, took shape during the Nixon administration, with the Powell Manifesto a towering signpost igniting a battle the right has waged against the left, teetering on victory we are praying away and doing our best to counteract.

And so today I recall that moment when our maid, a civil rights activist, came running down the front steps of our house as our car pulled up, crying "The president has been shot! The president has been shot!"

Something died besides JFK and "Camelot." Or was it Camelot? The battle to undo November 22 and return the government to We the People drags on.

The general thinking is that the assassination occurred more than a half-century ago so let's move on. Nothing could be further from the truth for the assassination of JFK is the foundational event of modern American history, the Pandora's box from which many decades of tragedy have sprung.

Hi and thanks for your comment. My take is that the assassinations of the sixties shed the blood of progressivism and opened the door to the GOP takeover that inexorably followed. We must look back in order to move forward most effectively. That's history. Not just JFK but that whole decade.

Mr. Kennedy states that "you'd be an idiot not to believe that President Kennedy was killed by a conspiracy," he originally did not believe that about his own father's murder - Ron Paul #Interview.

"There definitely was a shot from the right front side and it had to be from behind the picket fence on the grassy knoll and that's the shot that comes in, produces all this damage, causes blood and brain tissue to go backwards towards the left and so on, and that was the fatal shot" - Dr Cyril H Wecht @ 1:30:48.

This thought can sound way off the wall and crazy, even if have Read Revelation 12-13. It was soon after Corona Reckoning started, that I started to call the IMAGE of Church-State Beasts THE MAGA-EGO-IMAGE, and it came to me mind that JFK was the fatal wound which the Beatles Rock and Roll of the Pearls of Thunder (Kept secret in Revelation 10.) healed the Beast of. At same time, it came clear why the war in heaven of Revelation 12 was thrown down here to earth? (I'd know that since a Rocken Down angels awakening woke me up in 1994.) It was that Lucifer accusing all before the throne was right the 2 nukes on Japan were wrong. Welcome to earth 3rd Rock from the Sun. And it was days after the JFK fatal wound thought came to me, that first heard Bob Dylan sing "JFK A Murder Most Foul." Am quite certain of all this or would not be posting this.

"The Truth is Out There."

All we must do is open our eyes and question.

Presidential X-Files: JFK and the UFO Memorandum

In 2011, a UFO investigator named William Lester unearthed a memo, courtesy of a Freedom of Information Act search, which he suggested provided evidence of a motive for the assassination of John F. Kennedy, one connected to UFOs. The letter was written by President John F Kennedy to the head of the CIA ten days prior to his assassination. In the letter, Kennedy demanded to be shown highly confidential documents about UFOs. The secret memo is one of two letters written by JFK asking for information about the paranormal on November 12 1963.

Author William Lester said that the CIA released the documents to him under the Freedom of Information Act, after he made a request while researching his book entitled 'A Celebration of Freedom: JFK and the New Frontier.' According to Lester, Kennedy's interest in UFOs adds some fuel to conspiracy theories about his assassination.

Some ufologists that Lester spoke with say that the documents released to Mr Lester by the CIA, add weight to the suggestion that the president was killed in order to stop him discovering the truth about UFOs. In one of the secret documents released under the Freedom of Information Act, JFK writes to the director asking for the UFO files. In the second memo, sent to the NASA administrator, the president expresses a desire for cooperation with the former Soviet Union on mutual outer space activities.

In an interview with AOL news, Lester said of Kennedy "One of his concerns was that a lot of these UFOs were being seen over the Soviet Union and he was very concerned that the Soviets might misinterpret these UFOs as U.S. aggression, believing that it was some of our technology. I think this is one of the reasons why he wanted to get his hands on this information and get it away from the jurisdiction of NASA so he could say to the Soviets, 'Look, that's not us, we're not doing it, we're not being provocative.'" In the memo, datedNov. 12, 1963, the president ordered the CIA director to organize the agency's intelligence files relating to UFOs, and to debrief him on all "unknowns" by the following February.

Lester used the FOI procedure as part of his research. He said, "The government regularly declassifies documents after a certain amount of time goes by, and then you have to file a request for those documents. When I was in the process of filing, those letters had just become declassified and released to the public. At the time, I think other people were getting them too."

But some archivists have questioned the authenticity of the top secret memo. A research technician at the JFK Library in Boston said that he was unable to find a carbon copy of it in its presidential archive, which holds copies of all of JFK's letters, including his confidential ones. He said, "We did some research into the presidential papers to try to find any evidence of the Nov. 12, 1963 letter to the director of the CIA, John McCone, and in searching through the president's office files -- CIA, NASA and National Security files -- we could find no evidence of this memo or anything like it." He went on to say, "Something is a little odd about it. It is sanitized in very odd places: the director's name, the top heading of the document (which usually distinguishes which agency is generating it) and then the tiny 'top secret' print at the top of letter. Top secret items are usually stamped in large dark ink on the letter."

Lester believes the document to be authentic and claimed that the memo provides the "missing link" in a conspiracy theory surrounding another document, one which many conspiracy theorists argue shows that the CIA killed Kennedy to prevent his involvement in a UFO cover-up. This document, called the "burned memo," was allegedly passed to the some members of the non-mainstream media in 1999 by an anonymous source who claimed to be a former CIA operative. The alleged leaker claimed to have worked for the CIA between 1960 and 1974.

Blair,

Thank you for adding this to my repertoire of other motivations for the killing: the Bay of Pigs Invasion, LBJ's antagonism provoked by the Kennedy brothers' disdainful treatment of him; others (the CIA?) angered that JFK wanted to get out of Vietnam, and more, much more. JFK had provoked many fierce and powerful, vindictive cabals. I'm convinced by experts that they joined forces to murder him.

Yes, he was shaking things up. The establishment wouldn't tolerate that.

The ET stuff has been kept from other presidents. For more, see siriusdisclosure.com and Steven Greer's "Cosmic Hoax" on Youtube.

Thanks for your response.

With thanks for Marta Steele's evocative reflections on the JFK death and legacy, I'm afraid that respect for that legacy and our ongoing need for solid historical analysis requires me to challenge the fringe theory offered by Blair in the comment above.

It's illogical, very thinly supported even if the "missing" document actually existed -- and most importantly a serious distraction, like many, to understanding the true causes of the regime change that occurred in 1963, the cover-up and disinformation campaign that's lasted until currently. This regime change removing a president who would have ended the Vietnam War set in motion many corrupt and misguided forces and tragic developments that continue to harm the United States and the world. We must understand that process. "JFK and the Unspeakable: Why he died and why it matters" is justly regarded as among the best of the more than two thousand books on the topic, and its title aptly summarizes the continuing importance.

Let's not get distracted and confused.

Before addressing specifics of this UFO theory, let me remind readers here that I published on OEN about two weeks ago the top of a lengthy column, "JFK Murder Documents, Deadlines, Disclosures, Disputes," which summarized major JFK assassination research conferences, books, films, and archival records releases scheduled this fall by the White House. I spoke at two of the three conferences last week and assisted the leadership of a research organization that published a major paper last weekend on the causes of the JFK assassination. That paper by the 90-member Truth & Reconciliation Committee is here under the title "The Real Story." It was more than a year in development, drawing from top researchers to provide a concise document.

Although fringe theories -- UFO concerns or that a Secret Service agent may have accidentally shot the president, etc., etc. -- may capture the imagination and even the passions of a someone who wants to argue that they have solved such a dastardly historical crime I can say that they are not under consideration by the most active researchers, whether critics of the Warren Report or supporters of it. I receive about 5 to 8 such emails a day from researchers on my listserves and so am well-positioned to report to you what's seriously considered, even by those whom I might consider fundamentally wrong in their conclusions.

Here are the types of evidence that serious researchers debate. 1) the ballistics evidence and Zapruder film, of course. But there's also fairly solid evidence and a host of witnesses, books, etc. to support other irregularities in the investigation that point to perpetrators. During last week's conference, one expert pointed to the solid evidence that JFK's autopsy was faked, with a substitute brain inserted so as to refute the ballistics and other evidence evidence that JFK was shot from the front. Among many other solid witness and research tips, the former Life Magazine executive who played a key role in obtaining the Zapruder described how it was handled and, even more remarkably, amplified previous reports that his magazine was scheduled to publish a blockbuster expose on Vice President Lyndon Johnson, created with the help of RFK's Justice Department, that would have forced removal of LBJ from office and likely imprisoned him. That expose was spiked.

There are many other such solid motives, developments and evidence for multiple players to want JFK removed for multiple reasons, including JFK's plan to end the Vietnam War and his refusal to invade Cuba. But as we try to analyze such material, let's maintain our common sense. Neither UFO proponents nor the Mafia nor Cuban exiles, etc., had or retain the ability to control Congress, the courts, the Justice Department and the news media from the time of the killing to the present. It's just not logical to think they did but surely the institutions who want to thwart real truth-seeking or more than happy every time a new theory comes up and the general public thinks "no one will ever know..." In fact, we already know most of what we need to know. It's just a matter of looking at the most compelling evidence.

Evidence is the word. "Conspiracy theory" is a term popularized by the CIA and its friends to distract. It's a smear term. Evidence, by contrast, may be strong or weak. That's the way to analyze this and comparable historic crimes.

Hello Andrew,

Thanks for your reply.

You appear to be quite knowledgeable about the JFK material and I appreciate that. However, you give your preconceptions away when you use the term "fringe." I would suggest that, whether or not the ET matter was involved in Kennedy's demise, it is you who are providing "distractions."

First, I did not offer the data upon which you are commenting as anything definitive. Whenever we make a statement that puts "UFO" and "government" together, we are entering the realm of speculation, given the high level of secrecy and classification that are involved. In other words, to some degree the matter will be "iffy." In addition, the Kennedy assassination is not a prime concern for me, given the urgent matters that are happening in the present.

JFK and the Unspeakable is a fine book, but is likely only a partial treatment, for any number of reasons.

"Neither UFO proponents nor the Mafia nor Cuban exiles, etc., had or retain the ability to control Congress, the courts, the Justice Department and the news media from the time of the killing to the present."

Second, while you reference the term disinformation, it appears that you are ignorant about the way the security services (CIA, NSA, and other alphabet soup operations) function. What we see as "logic" has very little to do with the logic they employ.

I can not speak to issues about the Mafia or Cuban exiles per say. However, your statement reflects a gross lack of knowledge about the extraterrestrial matter. (con't)

From The Hill:

"For seven decades, government officials systematically dismissed, ignored and belittled any mention of UFOs. Indeed, despite mind-boggling intelligence assessments, Cold War-era national security fears led the U.S. government to apply scientifically absurd explanations to highly credible UFO encounters.

"In short, the prospect of a sitting high-level national security official openly discussing otherworldly origins for UFOs was long unthinkable until last week.

"Asked about a recent report in which the government admitted that it could not explain 143 out of 144 military encounters with mysterious flying objects - including several which appeared to demonstrate extraordinary technology - director of national intelligence Avril Haines said,

'There's always the question of 'is there something else that we simply do not understand, that might come extraterrestrially?'

"Haines's comment is the latest sign that a seismic shift in the government's official stance on UFOs is underway.

Just a few weeks before Haines's groundbreaking statement, NASA administrator Bill Nelson made waves by speculating publicly that UFOs might have otherworldly origins. Indeed, after meeting with the naval aviators who encountered objects that appeared to move in ways that defied physics and aerodynamics, Nelson is convinced that the pilots saw something truly extraordinary.

Moreover, after reading a classified government report on the military's recent UFO encounters, Nelson - an Army veteran, former senator and ex-astronaut - said, "The hair stood up on the back of my neck." Clearly, something has NASA's chief spooked.".

Admiral Roscoe Hillenkoetter,1st Director of the CIA is quoted:

"It is time for the truth to be brought out...Behind the scenes, high-ranking Air Force officials are soberly concerned about UFOs. But through official secrecy and ridicule, many citizens are led to believe the unknown flying objects are nonsense....I urge immediate Congressional action to reduce the dangers from secrecy about Unidentified Flying Objects."

(Please note the "dangers" that Hillenkoetter talks about are from SECRECY not from the UFOs).

It is no longer in vogue to refer to the extraterrestrial matter as "fringe." In fact, it only serves to shore up the forces that seek hegemony at home and abroad. (con't)

(con't) You wrote:

"But as we try to analyze such material, let's maintain our common sense."

It was "common sense" at one time to believe the Earth was flat and the Sun revolved around the Earth. These notions were subsequently superseded. In fact, the common sense you refer to, is exactly what the security services have been repeating ad nauseum for decades, in order to peripheralize those exploring the ET matter, just as they used the term "conspiracy theory" to obstruct investigation into the Kennedy assassination.

William J. Casey, former CIA Director is famously quoted via his 1981 statement: "We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false."

You have evidently gotten caught in one of their webs. I believe it would behoove you to expand your paradigm/worldview, so as not to be unnecessarily limiting yourself to views that are both valuable - and already passe'.

I have already provided references and can provide more. Did you avail yourself of them?

I can also recommend the interview with Paul Hellyer, former Canadian defense minister. on Youtube.

Blair:

Thank you for your thoughtful and fact-filled response. I appreciate that you put a lot of effort into compiling information on studies, events and other background on UFOs (which as you know are referenced under additional names these days to remove residual stigma from the uniformed).

To clarify, my comments were not to disparage that kind of research. In fact, two of my friends and colleagues are nationally prominent in that research and so I am familiar with some of the key points, although not an expert even by amateur standards.

That said, I fail to see the tight, provable connections from that field to the murder of JFK and to the ongoing cover-up in a manner similar to the strong evidence of other motives, players and actions.

Therefore, zeal in advocating the particular theme of UFO-related motivations, without the context of other evidence, seems to me misplaced and important to challenge.

There's another relevant factor. Whatever the accuracy and importance of studies of UFOs, our intelligence agencies have a documented history of using that particular term, "UFOs," and related topics, to denigrate those who probe sensitive intelligence-related matters, including JFK studies. It's much like the use of the term "conspiracy theory." Anyone using that term is (wittingly or unwittingly) spreading confusion and smearing discussion about the solid evidence that exists.

As an example of the use of the UFO and space alien concept to undercut more provable evidence regarding the JFK death and cover up, let me tell you about the Sixth Floor Museum in Dallas, formerly called the Texas School Book Depository, which was owned and operated by right-wing anti-Communists when Oswald secured a job there. A friend who is an expert on the assassination took me on a tour and pointed to a large wall-poster listing about a dozen possible reasons why JFK was killed. Prominently mentioned there on the wall for tourists to see is the claim that space aliens did the deed.

Yet nowhere among the dozen types of suspects and motives listed on the wall is the word "CIA" mentioned in this prominent exhibit at a museum that is visited by countless visitors seeking to learn. Somewhat curiously, to say the least, this museum was designed by a former high-ranking executive of the CIA, Charles Briggs. This is all readily ascertained. But how many of those visitors -- or even readers at this site, who tend to be more well-informed than the average person -- know this CIA-related involvement in the design of that important public education shrine to JFK's memory?

Finally, you suggest (for some reason) that I seem unfamiliar with how intelligence agencies work. True, I've never worked at one. Yet that permits my in-depth research and reporting without fear of violating non-disclosure agreements, thereby providing a certain freedom that I hope is useful for a commentator to have.

Additionally, I've had family members who worked in that field, including at least one on historically significant super-sensitive projects that I've described in my most recent book.

Further, I've talked for years often on a daily basis about newsworthy and historically significant developments with one or more colleagues who have been retired intelligence officers and who care about historical truth and accurate reporting on current affairs. I'll mention one, John Kelly, a former NBC and CBS network correspondent in the 1960s and 1970s on big stories who also worked as a CIA officer in a different part of his career in the late 1960s. About five years ago, he provided the idea to frequent OEN contributor Wayne Madsen, himself a former Navy intelligence officer, to write an encyclopedia entitled "The Almost Classified Guide to CIA Front Companies, Proprietaries and Contractors." This 400-page book provides a unique roadmap for citizen and scholarly investigators to entities that perform sensitive intelligence projects, often on a covert basis. That's one of perhaps 80 major books on the CIA, NSA and other intelligence agencies that I keep within arm's reach in my office as I undertake my reporting.

Even so, one anecdote underscores the difficulty of any of these researches -- and which I recall here to remind myself to try to stay reasonably humble in any such endeavors. It involves the former two-time Acting CIA Director Michael Morell, a longtime deputy director at the agency. In 2015, I was among a half dozen reporters interviewing him at the National Press Club on the occasion of the publication of his memoir. To each of my three questions, including "Why does the CIA resist disclosure of JFK materials?" or words to that effect, he responded in a pleasant voice, "I don't know."

Later, on the way out, I remarked privately to him that I had assumed that, as commonly the case in DC, a longtime No. 2 like him at an agency, "ran" everything. He responded, "I did run everything. But I don't know everything."

Well, I think that helps illustrate how even when we've done a lot of research and have the rare opportunity to question top people there's still uncertainty. But the stakes are high enough for us all that it's worth keeping at it. Thank you again for your contribution to this dialogue.

Hello Andrew,

Thank you very much for your comprehensive response.

To be clear, I am without certainty about the Kennedy-ET connection. I simply posted something on it, because I sense an air of plausability about it. Rather than looking for tight provable connections, we need the patience for things to unfold.

No doubt there is still much that is unknown about the Kennedy assassination - and that goes double or more re- the ET's. Yet, my own conclusion is that the ET issue is profoundly relevant to our present and future. If you wish, see the references I made available.

Just because others' paradigms have been conditioned to be narrow, doesn't mean that ours needs to be. Nor, I believe should we be overly worried about additional theories muddying the waters. There is much that is possible, which we can't yet imagine.

What I do believe is that the security agencies employ compartmentalization and often use multiple layers of deception, secrecy, and false leads in going about their business. And because I am referring to "Black and Deep Black Projects" we need be at once humble and warrior-like in working to transform the world.

Marta, love your reminder of how important history is, and this event in particular. It was a blow to progressives and the beginning of a willingness to use violence to put down progressive movements.

With regard to LBJ's involvement one should note that even though he denied (in a sentence, or two) LBJ's involvement in Kennedy's death his biographer, Robert Caro, made clear three things about LBJ over and over in his books. First, he was a physical coward. Second, his personal interest in the Presidency was only about a sociopathic drive for personal power, never politics. And, third, LBJ's approach to the world is captured in the advice he always gave to underlings, "If you do everything, you will win."

At the time of the assassination LBJ was within days of being exposed in Life magazine as a co-conspirator with Billie Sol Estes in a criminal scheme that would have ended his political career. Further, the Altgen's photo shows he, LBJ, was already in the floorboards of his limo one second after the first shot was fired at Dealey Plaza. A newspaper article I read in the '70's published the photo for the first time and quoted a motorcycle cop riding beside LBJ's car as saying, "The Vice President was in the floorboards 30 seconds before the first shot was fired." Caro's one-sentence denial of LBJ's guilt is accompanied by books-length proof of his likelihood of being the leader of the conspiracy in JFK's murder.

Johnson's passage of Kennedy's legislative agenda was the perfect cover for him. It proved he had no political motive in JFK's assassination. Who would believe someone would kill a President just to improve one's resume.

Further, there is no doubt in my mind that LBJ was also at the root of the killings of RFK and Martin Luther King. A President Robert Kennedy would have re-opened the investigation into JFK's death, and Johnson knew it. Finally, note that a Memphis civil jury found that James Earl Ray didn't kill Dr. King. They pointed to a cast of characters including Clyde Tolson, J. Edgar Hoover's assistant(?). Hoover was likely Johnson's legislative edge, a back-door to the dirt on other legislators that gave him the power to make things happen in the legislature.

Phillip,

Thoroughly amazing and harrowing information!

How to reach the public, let alone the history books. Why only progressive webpages? At least it's there.

Many thanks for this new perspective on an abomination that keeps spiraling. It must stay alive at whatever levels are possible.

Thanks for this, Marta! My memories come up every year... My mom and I were getting ready for the school bake & book sale, and we were just taking the brownies out of the oven as we heard the news on the radio. The brownies cooled, and we wrapped them, then drove to school, and I told my teachers what had happened. It must have been an hour after we heard about it, but news didn't travel very fast in those days. (Nowadays, everyone knows about these things instantly - when my daughter was at Virginia Tech, within moments of the shootings all her classmates' phones eerily started lighting up with texts at the same time.)

At first, my music teacher thought I was making it up - that's how much we didn't expect things like that back then.

This year, in my Day of the Dead nicho workshop, I honored Jackie and her memorable pink Chanel suit, JFK's favorite, and he had specifically requested that she wear it that day. First it was pink, then it was pink and red. When her handlers brought her new clothing to change into, she said no, "they need to see what they did to Jack."

With all the drama around the assassination, Jackie's incredible influence is often overlooked. In three short years, she turned our White House from a shambles to a museum quality building. She was also supremely influential in placing the arts in a position of importance in this country-- previously they had been mostly ignored. The governmental assistance to the arts that we enjoy today can be traced back to Jackie. I'm grateful for her influence, and sad that it came at such a cost.
