The word is in: After months of wondering what would happen after he pleaded guilty to violating campaign finance laws (a felony, in case you were wondering), we have learned that the prosecutors are recommending he be sent up the river for 16 months-- 8 months short of the two year stretch he could have gotten once he plea-bargained.
Dinesh, of course, had other ideas. Early last week, he'd thrown himself on their mercy, describing himself as a "disgraced and humiliated man ... This should not have happened, and I am ashamed and contrite that it did."
Not contrite enough to meekly accept a jail term, however: Dinesh proposed that he that he be allowed probation, instead, hoping to do "community service that could involve teaching, instructing new immigrants in English, or working at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater San Diego."
The government said ... D'Souza waited to "the last possible moment" prior to trial before admitting guilt, and then went on TV shows and the Internet to complain about being "selectively" targeted for prosecution, and having little choice but to plead guilty.
"Based on the defendant's own post-plea statements, the court should reject the defendant's claims of contrition on the eve of sentencing," prosecutors led by U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara in Manhattan said in the filing.
In other words, it would appear that a karma-mobile piled high with irony has finally collided with Mr. D'souza. After years of using his mouth to make money, his inability to keep it shut is now going to take it away.
The sentencing will occur September 23rd. Expect a spectacle.
