Democrats, most Independents, and even many Republicans are in agreement that the Bush/Cheney regime has been an utter calamity for our country and are eagerly anticipating the conclusion of this dismal chapter in our history. There is every reason to anticipate that in November the Democratic Party will win not only the White House, but the Congress as well; including a filibuster proof majority in the Senate.
Confident of this, the Democratic leadership has made the calculation that the party should just let the clock run out on this criminal administration and has taken impeachment "off the table."
It's clear to everyone that Bush has violated many provisions of the constitution and international law. He is conducting illegal surveillance of citizens, holding and torturing prisoners without charge, denying habeas corpus to those held, and waging illegal aggressive war against Iraq; ravaging its infrastructure, killing its people and looting its resources.
Many observers, this writer included, are afraid that, to save himself from prosecution, Bush will simply refuse to leave office. He will launch a series of internal false flag attacks similar in scale to 9/11, declare a national emergency, institute martial law enforced, if necessary, by his private mercenary army (e.g. Blackwater), assume dictatorial authority and "postpone" elections during the "crisis" (which, of course, will continue indefinitely). Sic semper tyrannis! (so it is always with tyrants).
To avoid this bitter result and restore our constitutional republic Congressional Democrats must grow a spine, impeach Bush and Cheney, remove them from office and arrange for their prosecution. Failing to do this, then with Thomas Jefferson; "I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just."
