Trump isn't preparing to win""he's preparing to lose

Donald Trump's vice presidential litmus test is pretty simple: Are you committed to rejecting the 2024 results if Trump loses the election? On Sunday, Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida became the latest Republican to betray the nation, not to mention their oath of office, for a chance at being selected as Trump's running mate. Rubio joins Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York, and South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem in publicly prostrating themselves to Trump for the lure of power.

Democrats are putting filibuster reform on the ballot

Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema are on their way out of the Senate, which means Democrats' biggest block to progress""the filibuster""could be, too. Filibuster reform is front and center in this election, with Democrats arguing that a restoration of abortion rights, voting rights, and civil liberty protections hang in the balance. Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley, a longtime leading advocate of filibuster reform, told NBC News that the prospects for reform look promising if the Democrats hold the Senate.

Sen. JD Vance tries to spin past praise for Hungary's authoritarian leader

During Sunday's "Face the Nation," Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance was asked about his praise for Donald Trump favorite Viktor Orba'n, Hungary's longtime authoritarian prime minister. Back in February, Vance lauded the Hungarian strongman for "successfully dealing with left-wing domination of universities," saying it should be "the model for" conservatives in the U.S. "What you're seeing in the United States, actually, is that universities are controlled by left-wing foundations. They're not controlled by the American taxpayer," Vance told host Margaret Brennan, mimicking the baseless propaganda promoted by other mini fascists like Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis

Montana attorney general recruited primary opponent to boost campaign fundraising

Montana's attorney general told supporters he skirted the state's campaign finance laws by inviting another Republican to run against him as a token candidate in next month's primary so he could raise more money for the November general election, according to a recording from a fundraising event. "I do technically have a primary," Attorney General Austin Knudsen said last week when asked at the event who was running against him. "However, he is a young man who I asked to run against me because our campaign laws are ridiculous."

Marco Rubio joins list of VP hopefuls who won't accept election results

Sen. Marco Rubio has joined the list of Republicans who refuse to say they would accept the outcome of the 2024 presidential election. When asked by "Meet the Press" host Kirsten Welker on Sunday if he would accept the election results, "no matter what happens," the Florida senator went into fight and flight mode at the same time. Rubio: No matter what happens? No, if it's an unfair election, I think it's going to be contested by each side Welker: No matter who wins.

Ted Cruz pretends to care about IVF in desperate bid for reelection

Sen. Ted Cruz's latest attempt to make himself likable to Texas voters involves joining with Alabama Republican Sen. Katie Britt to introduce what they call "a Senate bill to clear up confusion after an Alabama Supreme Court ruling" on in vitro fertilization. The dubious duo's Wall Street Journal op-ed comes after both of them refused to support a bill from Illinois Sen. Tammy Duckworth and other Democrats that would have done just that.

Trump gives NRA fear-mongering speech with a QAnon 'musical interlude'

Donald Trump suggested that he might run for three terms during his visit to Dallas, Texas, this weekend to speak at the National Rifle Association's annual meeting. The NRA awarded Trump its endorsement as he went on stage. He delivered his usual rambling, non sequitur fest by comparing himself to Al Capone, talking about his inherited "genius," and bragging about how he ended Roe v. Wade. Trump also shared a good amount of fear-mongering, claiming that President Joe Biden had eroded gun rights but failing to give any examples.

Live coverage: Trump still says he wants to testify as prosecution could rest its case

Donald Trump's trial for 34 counts of falsifying business records to hide his encounter with adult film star Stormy Daniels in advance of the 2016 election resumes Monday with the prosecution expected to rest its case.   The cross-examination of former Trump attorney Michael Cohen is expected to conclude in the first hours of Monday morning. Prosecutors have already indicated that their re-direct of Cohen is expected to last less than an hour and that Cohen will be the final prosecution witness. So the case could go to the defense before the court breaks for lunch.

7 stories to know: Fewer voter registrations, more vasectomies, and why spelling sucks

"7 stories to know" is a new Monday series showcasing stories that may have been ignored in the crush of news over the past few weeks, and stories that have continued to evolve over the weekend. Expect to read coverage about health, science, and climate that frequently take second chair to what's happening at the top of the page, plus information from local sources that the national media may have overlooked.

1. Republicans are making it harder and harder to register new voters

While new voters or voters who have recently moved to a new location can register at any time, there are usually big drives to get people registered ahead of each election. Both parties make an outreach to new voters, but with Democrats holding a 28-point margin among the youngest group of voters, it's understandable that registration drives tend to be slightly more exciting on the left than on the right.
