I am a retired elementary school teacher and live with my husband in western maryland. I love our country and value the Declaration of independence and the constitution. We have made progress in many areas since our country's birth but nothing in the way of human rights has ever been achieved without active citizen participation. We have also slaughtered many innocent people in our colonial conquests which are ongoing and are very rarely discussed. We need to decide whether we wish to be a republic or global, hegemonic conquerors. We can't be both. I've read Thoreau and Emerson and wish to revive this active citizenship. Civil disobedience is needed in order for any democracy to function. If we can't speak out and discuss all sides of issues in a civilized way, our democracy is already dead. I write children's stories with this intent in mind.
