Book Review: "am I being kind" by Michael J. Chase
Presenting stories of his own imperfect self and spiritual evolution as context, Chase delivers a simple and digestible message influenced by The Dalai Lama, Mother Teresa, Eckhart Tolle, Ram Dass, Buddha and Christ (among others), without being cerebral, esoteric or religious.

New Anti-Islamic Working Class Group Rattles British Government
A new anti-islamic white working class grass-roots organization has got the British political establishment rattled. The English Defense League (EDL)has moved in to fill the vacuum caused by widespread disenchantment with traditional mainstream parties as the UK struggles with the economic recession.
Harvey Wasserman:
Still more fluff, lies and radiation from TMI and the new nuke media machine
Like this vast core of green groups, Moody's, Standard & Poor, Citibank and a powerful cohort of financial analysts see atomic power as a horrific investment that can only be described as, well, radioactive. The risks of building a new reactor, says a recent Citibank report, "are so large and variable that individually they could each bring even the largest utility company to its knees."

Short Story: "Striking the Set Piece" (12th in a series)
If corporations could be convicted of their crimes, which ones would you want to bring to justice? Some, such as Blackwater, are obvious choices, because they boldly flaunt the law, or sidestep it by operating in the grey zones between government and private industry. Others are more subtle. They bankroll campaigns and pad pockets, and in return, get legislation either passed or blocked. Don't be hoodwinked by the puppeteers.

The Real Irony of Psalms 109 (3 comments)
The rich irony is that those who have chosen this Bible verse as a slogan clearly have no idea of the context and meaning of that which they quote.
The Bible clearly says the exact opposite of that which they imply.

Is Sean Hannity's Political Talk Hampering Our Children's Critical Thinking? (14 comments)
The Supreme Court will soon be deciding if McCain-Feingold campaign regulation should allow corporations to fund election propaganda. But we already have this going on every day in talk radio, where the #1 broadcasters in the US are openly partisan and supported by corporate contributors like the Heritage Foundation. Should we allow propaganda over public airwaves and if so, what will this do to our children?

David R. Griffin's review of The Ground Truth
The one-sidedness of Farmer's book is manifest in his endnotes, which include no reference to any writings aimed at exposing serious problems with the 9/11 Commission. Farmer does not even mention "The Commission" by former New York Times writer Philip Shenon, who pointed out, among other things, that Zelikow had secretly written a detailed outline of the Commission's report before his research staff had even begun its work.

Gideon Levy: Israel is lying to itself about 'united Jerusalem'
And the prime minister has told us other lies, such as "our commitment to protect freedom of worship for all the religions in Jerusalem, and to ensure fair and equal treatment for the city's residents, Jews and Arabs alike." Freedom of worship? It's a sad joke. In no other city is access to holy places restricted.

Have the Media 'Falsely Framed' ACORN?
During its four decades of community organizing, ACORN has earned the ire of certain business groups, banks and pay-day lenders, and and the Republican Party. Their attack on ACORN is part of a broader conservative effort to discredit Barack Obama -- first as a candidate, then as President.

The myth of the superhuman terrorist
Hysteria hits high water when talk turns to the detention center at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. Elected officials seem to have taken lessons from P.T. Barnum: "The most deadly killers in the world"; "The worst of the worst." But when proof substitutes for prattle, federal judges see it differently: Thirty-eight prisoners have had their fate decided by the courts, and 30 have been cleared.

ZIHOP as Limited Hangout
The Military Industrial Complex did not arise from some flaw in the American character, nor indeed from Zionism. It arose, simply put, because capital requires more capital, power more power still. Powerful states act out. “Small states are virtuous only because of their weakness.” (Bakunin).
Why Afghans Dig Empire Graveyards
It is precisely the far greater dangers that people in other countries have faced in the past that enable them to put the threat of terrorism in perspective. Paradoxically, it is the relative safety of the United States that makes Americans so vulnerable to panic and propaganda when faced with such a limited threat.
Eric Margolis: Critics of Afghanistan need to look in mirror (1 comments)
Ironically, across the Muslim world, the same western powers scourging Karzai are seen as major sources of corruption, keeping a repressive regime in power by buying dictators, generals and politicians. Many Afghans support the Taliban because it is seen as an enemy of corruption and an enforcer of justice, however harsh.
Paul Krugman: The Phantom Menace (2 comments)
it's politically difficult for the Obama administration to enact a full-scale second stimulus. Still, he should be trying to push through as much aid to the economy as possible. And remember, Mr. Obama has the bully pulpit; it's his job to persuade America to do what needs to be done.

Newspaper circulation may be worse than it looks
While U.S. newspapers are losing subscribers at a staggering rate, a few dailies stand out because their circulation is rising. But they aren't necessarily selling more copies. Under the new auditing standards, if a newspaper sells a "bundled" subscription to both the print and electronic editions, the publication is often allowed to count that subscriber twice.

Part Two: Talking with Investigative Journalist Margie Burns on Health Care (6 comments)
The question to ask opponents of health care reform legislation should be simple and clear: Are you in favor of letting carriers get away with bad-faith practices such as denying claims fraudulently? Not answering their phones? Not explaining denials to policyholders? No? Then how do you propose to deal with the problem?

Review: The Ground Truth by John Farmer
In recent public opinion surveys, roughly half the country believes the official account of what occurred on 9/11/2001 to be substantially true, and half is skeptical. Apparently John Farmer, the man who penned the official 9-11 Commission Report in 2003, is in the latter group.

Talking with Investigative Journalist Margie Burns on Health Care
The WP in particular, the paper I get, went for decades without mentioning insurance bad faith.Literally:I checked LexisNexis, and the last time the Post mentioned bad faith in insurance was 1986.These big newspapers produce the reports that other newspapers in turn run, and they own other papers,or their parent companies do.Hasn't worked out well for the mid-Atlantic. None of this has worked out well for policyholders.
