Thanks for clarifying with a historical reference such as this. The marginalization of progressive Christians is one thing but self-censorship in church, media and community has been the most devasting response to issues of our times, like war, peace, justice, fairness, and reform or renewal.

While it is true that many churches were torn in half by the Civil War and Slavery, some leaders and too many parishioners held out hope that by being silent, things would evolve and reform themselves eventually. That went on from the 1780s through the outbreak of the civil war.

America needs no civil war, civility would be a start.
