Is John McCain's quest for the presidency effectively over?

By Mary MacElveen

One can almost see that he has abdicated this race when he answered a supporter who clearly stated that he was scared of Senator Obama and McCain stated, "He is a person you do not have to be scared of as president of the United States." One must wonder if in that moment in time he somehow realized that his campaign was effectively over.

::::::::

So, where does John McCain go after shooting himself in both feet as he placed America in danger by inflaming hate as he has done this past week?  I certainly do not know, but what he and his campaign did was inexcusable.  In viewing this feed, you will clearly see McCain call Senator Barack Obama a “decent person”  Note to Senator McCain, it is the way so many across this country do see Senator Barack Obama and why he is rising in the polls.

One can almost see that he has abdicated this race when he answered a supporter who clearly stated that he was scared of Senator Obama and McCain stated, “He is a person you do not have to be scared of as president of the United States.” One must wonder if in that moment in time he somehow realized that his campaign was effectively over.

In that feed a woman calls Senator Obama an Arab and that can be directly tied to where others who have spoke at his rallies and have used Obama’s middle name which is Hussein.

In watching him on MSNBC, his dialing-down of this hate towards Obama was met with boos coming from his supporters.  Never a good thing and one wonders if they will still support him for the duration of this campaign.  Will hate-based broadcasters like Rush Limbaugh allow McCain to get away with this mea-culpa to his millions of listeners?  Will these now disenfranchised hate-based voters sit this campaign out?  I really do not know.

In switching gears in an act of self-penance, I would like to know who is in control of this campaign.  Is it truly John McCain or his campaign staff?  If it is his staff, then this stanza from George Harrison’s song, “While my Guitar Gently Weeps” is applicable, “I don't know how someone controlled you…They bought and sold you.” So much for being a maverick.

By playing to this hateful base one has to wonder how independents and moderate Republicans will vote.  If I were them, I would run as fast as I can mea-culpa or not.

The ugliness of this campaign goes right back to the Republican convention held in St. Paul, Missouri. Their convention as opposed to the Democratic one was filled with an us vs. them mentality.  Especially when Mitt Romney launched his attacks on liberals and where they demonized the media.

Now in this feed, you can clearly see how McCain supporters were either programmed by the campaign or did McCain play to the lowest common denominator in reaching out to folks like this?  Pay attention to where one man states of Obama that he is a “One man terror-cell” Nice!

When McCain has stated of Barack Obama, “Who is the real Barack Obama?” we must answer that back by stating, “Who is the real John McCain?” How can we as Americans trust a candidate running for the highest office of this land to keep us secure when this week he left many feeling insecure?  He can no longer claim national security in his bona fides.

Through the use of hate, both he and Palin have used a Roman candle in playing tinder-box politics given our current economic crisis.

Speaking of the economic crisis, this is what Rick Davis who is McCain’s campaign manager had to say of it, “I don't know if you really want to turn a campaign into a CNBC news show on the stock market," he said. "I mean it doesn't mean that we don't care and aren't trying to do something about it. It's just I'm not exactly sure what you say everyday." People do need to hear what these candidates are saying  everyday and their specific plans in how they will address this one issue as president. Davis was dismissive towards those who are suffering and blew it big time.

Now onto Sarah Palin who was found to have abused her power as governor of Alaska and according to the AP, was “in violation of a state ethics law that prohibits public officials from using their office for personal gain.” They also reported, “The inquiry looked into her dismissal of Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan, who said he lost his job because he resisted pressure to fire a state trooper involved in a bitter divorce and custody battle with the governor's sister. Palin says Monegan was fired as part of a legitimate budget dispute.”

In watching the news today one pundit even remarked that this can be an impeachable offense. How can we as Americans trust Senator McCain’s judgment in picking as his running mate who was found by a bi-partisan body to have violated state ethics law?

She has been a drag on the ticket lately and should for some reason McCain or his campaign staff seek to replace her, again, it shows McCain’s instability.  We cannot have that at this time.

In scoping out some reader comments to this story on MSNBC, this one jumped out at me, “I have decided to stop my lifelong affiliation with the Republican Party. The ONLY thing that McCain and Palin and their ignorant supporters have left are fear and hate!” This commenter who is from Tennessee no less also had this to say, “My White, working-class, Southern Baptist, pro-gun, pro-life, vote will be proudly casted for OBAMA-BIDEN!” Impressive!

One commenter from South Carolina even wrote, “did McCain just endorse Obama as pres?” Judging from what he said to one of his supporters, I can see how this commenter drew this conclusion.

In a past article I wrote concerning racism, I mentioned Barack Obama’s daughters and this one comment stood out, “This is shameful for McCain.  I think about the Obama children and it hurts my heart so bad to think of something happening to their daddy makes me want to throw-up.” Yes, what these hateful supporters who have been shouting out from the audience forget is that Barack Obama does have two young daughters.  So much for morality coming from the Republican Party specifically the McCain campaign.

I used to be a Republican and this new breed of Republicans I see operating the McCain campaign are so foreign to me.  This is precisely why I fled the party back in 1998 and became a Democrat.  The Karl Roves, the Tom Delays and others just like them alienated me.  This corner of the Republican Party are certainly not putting country first, they only look to divide us.  It is up to we the people come Election Day to serve as their reminders that we are a United States of America.

This week proved we cannot trust John McCain in stirring up this hate and the choosing of Sarah Palin. These are “dangerous times” cited by Barack Obama today.  He is not fit to be the commander in chief come January 20th, 2009.  I think his penance should be is to serve out the remainder of his senate term and let the country move on.
