Some Corporate Media "News" and Deciphering Its Truer Meaning

By Dave Lefcourt

The corporate media "news" or just another example of it being a mouthpiece for U.S. government propaganda which does little to keep the people properly informed or increase their understanding of the government's true Machiavellian purposes.

::::::::

Here's the "news". The circus was in town and three tigers jumped through a burning hoop. An elephant was born at the zoo and a Rhesus monkey was discovered missing.

In other "news", the North Korean's launched a satellite into orbit yesterday and in response the U.S. was considering new sanctions against the "Hermit Kingdom". Fear that the rocket propelling the satellite could be fitted with a nuclear weapon that could reach the continental U.S. was behind the sanctions consideration.

President Obama excluded the "Al- Nasra Front" while recognizing the "Syrian National Coalition for Opposition and Revolutionary Forces" as the "legitimate representative of the Syrian people" fighting against the regime of President Bashar Assad, (the "Al-Nasra Front" was considered a "terrorist" group and therefore excluded).

Army Colonel James Pohl, the judge in the military commission trial of Khalid Sheikh Mohammad, the alleged master mind of the 9/11 attacks, ruled "enhanced interrogation techniques that were applied to the accused"including descriptions of the techniques as applied, the duration, frequency, sequencing and limitations of those techniques will remain classified" for reasons of national security.

The U.S. and the Philippines agreed "to increase the number of U.S. military ships, aircraft and troops rotating through the Philippines" as part of the new U.S. "pivot" in Asia.

Ah you the reader easily recognize the first paragraph of this "news" report is just nonsense, not "news" and a phony story just made up to appear as if it were "news". Yep all true.

Unfortunately, the other four parts of the "reported news" all appeared this morning in my local hometown newspaper, The Baltimore Sun.

Now let's briefly analyze and interpret these four "true" unrelated newspaper stories and offer an admittedly subjective viewpoint as to their relevance and factual importance.

As to the North Korean's successful launch and potential for that rocket to be fitted with a nuclear weapon that could reach the continental U.S., the simple answer is "So what"!

All nuclear weapons are for deterrence and defensive purposes only. They're developed for the express purpose of NOT being a potential candidate for attack, (as no nuclear armed state has ever attacked another nuclear armed state). MAD, mutually assured destruction, which prevented any consideration of a pre-emptive attack by the Soviet Union or the U.S. during the cold war, still prevails. No country, including North Korea, would invite its own assured annihilation by launching a nuclear weapon particularly against the U.S. with thousands of its own nuclear weapons. That's propaganda fear and madness that doesn't fit reality.

Yet the "implication" behind the "factual" newspaper story was the people in the U.S. should be fearful of a North Korean rocket fitted with a nuclear device that could hit the U.S. It ain't gonna happen!

As to Obama naming an opposition faction in Syria as "terrorist" and opposing it while supporting other opposition factions fighting against the Assad regime, is simply crazy on a number of fronts.

There are a "reported" 20 some odd opposition groups fighting the regime. Being able to decipher which groups are "legitimate" is impossible. But this is what happens when the absurd U.S. "terrorist" label is assigned to certain groups (not just in Syria but around the world) and used as a protective cover by the U.S. to justify its insane "war on terror". We support only "freedom fighters" against Assad and all others are "terrorists". Please.

Syria is in the midst of a civil war. Any interference by the U.S. could lead to a wider war beyond Syria. Designating, supporting, arming the opposition are all counterproductive measures and could bring a wider war. Nothing in that newspaper story alluded to that possibility.

As to the upcoming military tribunal trial of Sheikh Mohammad; by not allowing torture, extraordinary rendition, indefinite detention to be presented by the defense as evidence and shielding it from being presented for reasons of national security reveals the depth of injustice the U.S. has descended to since 9/11.

The fear in allowing the defense to present evidence could reveal the U.S. being guilty of committing crimes against humanity (torture), ignoring the Geneva Accords (conduct in war) and the U.N. provisions allowing only action in defense of the country (and against pre-emptive war and aggression).

This "trial" of Mohammad is reminiscent of the trumped up show trials conducted in the Soviet Union, China, Iran and Nazi Germany (just to name a few of the more notorious regimes). Sadly the U.S. has joined that list of ignoble regimes.

Lastly, the newspaper story of the U.S. and the Philippines agreeing to expand the U.S. military presence in that country; the U.S. currently has a naval armada operating in the South China Sea. Its purported purpose is to protect China's smaller neighbors from the Chinese colossus. In reality it's an example of widening U.S. hegemony in Asia to contain China and disguised as "protection".

The local disputes in the South China Sea between China and its neighbors including the Philippines, Viet Nam and Malaysia have existed for decades. Now with mineral deposits being discovered, primarily over oil and gas rights, all are claiming sovereignty and thus the heightened tensions. But the heightened U.S. presence, again disguised as providing protection can only exacerbate the disputes and the U.S. can be justly accused of interfering outside its "sphere of influence" while raising unnecessary tensions and a possible confrontation with China.

Of course, all of these newspaper stories depict an innocent U.S. acting benignly and protective of U.S. interests and its people. Nothing could further from the truth.

It's just another example of the corporate media being a mouthpiece for U.S. government propaganda which does little to keep the people properly informed or increase their understanding of our government's true Machiavellian purposes.
