Pentagon about to Deploy over 1400 Spies Overseas

By Dave Lefcourt

The Pentagon's DIA, Defense Intelligence Agency, in the past focused on battlefield issues. It's about to expand worldwide & engage in CIA type undercover espionage against terror & emerging "enemies" like Iran, N.Korea & China. Is the world the new battlefield? What if such "enemies" are overblown, contrived or imagined? Such sane questions are not asked.

The Pentagon Building

Every day, or so it seems, new revelations emerge on the expansion of the U.S. national security surveillance state.

The Pentagon, which operates the DIA, Defense Intelligence Agency, has in the past focused on "battlefield" issues. That's fairly straight forward, wanting to know enemy troop strengths, locations, movements, plans etc.

But with the military out of Iraq and their presence about to be terminated in Afghanistan by 2014, the "brass" decided to get engaged in the type of undercover espionage work the CIA used to do before the spooks over in Langley got more into directing and carrying out military type attacks using drones and special operations becoming the presidents private army that could operate clandestinely in Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia and if anything went wrong, just deny its very existence.

So with the CIA becoming more militarized, the Pentagon is planning to expand the DIA's scope of activity and grow from a few hundred battlefield operatives to over 1600 spy "collectors" positioned around the world focusing on "Africa, weapons transfers by North Korea and Iran and military modernization of China".

According to DIA director, Lt. General Michael Flynn, "This is not marginal adjustment for DIA. This is a major adjustment for national security".

From here, it's a further expansion and merging of clandestine military special operations, CIA type undercover spying combined with drone attacks and targeted assassinations brought together into a seamless operative force and kept mostly secret for reasons of national security.

Whether the Congress was notified of the Pentagons DIA plans is not known, but those on Capital Hill have pretty much ceded their authority over to the executive branch on such "defense" related matters back in 2001, and basically rubber stamps and approves the funding.   Ditto the same for its oversight responsibility.

As to the general public on such matters, most probably could care less about why the Pentagon is venturing into world espionage activity outside its usual battlefield intelligence gathering. Could it be the world is the new battlefield?

That makes sense particularly for those who believe we're waging an endless global war against terror and emerging potential enemies.

Whether all such "enemies" are overblown, contrived or imagined isn't part of the discussion. Those kind of sane questions are not asked.
