Should You Believe

By Hal O'Leary

Should You Believe, if you do believe that we are still living in a democracy, think again.

::::::::

   SHOULD YOU BELIEVE

Should you believe we have democracy,

Should you believe Americans are free,

Should you believe Iran's our enemy,

Should you believe in Washington, D. C,

I must say you and I do not agree.

I don't believe we have democracy.

Two parties? Just a joke on you and me,

For both are owned by one plutocracy.

The thought that "we the people' hold the key

To what we think our country ought to be,

Begins to look like base insanity.

I fear it's gone the way of chastity.

It's gone the way of truth and honesty,

Or trust without which love will cease to be.

We're faced with loss of all humanity.

I don't believe Americans are free.

This so-called "War on Terror", we should see

It as a War on Freedom.   c'est la vie.

I fear, in honesty, we must foresee

The Patriot Act as an atrocity.

And the N D A A, calamity,

Unconstitutional for all to see.

The wiretaps do away with privacy

Library use?   We cannot guarantee.

We're spied on with no criminality.

I don't believe Iran's our enemy

While Pakistan and Israel can be

At Iran's door with nukes and openly

Insist Iran has no authority

To call for and expect equality.

It smacks of blatant smug hypocrisy.

With Gods the same, an opportunity

For lasting peace and reciprocity

Has given way to this iniquity.

We're told Iran must be the enemy.

I don't believe in Washington, D, C,

In homage to the A I P A C,

In turn, in homage to a company

Of greedy vultures, who with certainty

Have used our wealth and our civility,

With greed, to add to their prosperity.

Their homage goes to just one entity,

Themselves, and once again, it's c'est la vie.

There's precious little left for you and me.

But just to cope with this obscenity.

Should you believe we have democracy?

Should you believe Americans are free?

Should you believe Iran's our enemy?

Should you believe in Washington, D. C?

If naught but slavery is your cup of tea.

Hal O'Leary

Authors Bio:
Hal O'Leary is an 88 year old veteran of WWII who, having spent his life in theatre, and as a Secular Humanist, believes that it is only through the arts that we are afforded an occasional glimpse into the otherwise incomprehensible. As an 'atheist in the fox hole', he composed his epitaph at age 20.

With open mouth and open mind,
I came into the world to find
Life's riddle in one word defined,
BELIEVE!

And now, that Life is left behind,
Although I know they would be kind,
With open mouth and open mind,
I LEAVE!

Hal was recently inducted into the Wheeling Hall of Fame and is the recipient of an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from West Liberty University. His two favorite quotes are:

"I build my house on nothing, therefore the whole world is mine."
Johann Wolfgang Goethe

"I don't know if there is a Utopia, but I am certain that we must act as though there can be."
Sean O'Leary
