Moving Beyond External Revolution Towards Internal Evolution

By Burl Hall

We have sold out and have been sold out to external authorities. In order for humanity to evolve, we must reclaim our internal powers to co-create the world we live in.

Jennifer Wells (2013), author of Complexity and Sustainability writes: "We should consider that we are not just a product of our times, but also, that we coproduce our times through our ideas and actions (p.128)." In our modern day, we tend to blame most of our problems on them-- the externals. And, to a large degree, we are right; we are beholden to those powers that are said to be in authority. Yet, at what point do we realize that giving power over to authority is allowing our lives to be authored by external agents with purposes and values quite different from our own internal ones?

This is the path humanity has taken for the past several centuries. We have allowed ourselves to be ruled by the external influences of government, science, educators, and corporations. We have been enslaved by absentee landowners dressed in business suits, beaten by whip-wielding gents sporting southern drawls, and mesmerized and hypnotized by corporate bosses. Our lower classes have been enslaved in meaningless, repetitive jobs that the masses accepted after they had fought hard and won rights such as sustainable pay, benefits and a sane number of working hours. Even our shrinking middle class lives under the guillotine of "The Man."

Moreover, all of these voices of authority are replayed in our conditioned consciousness. We have to be the best to thrive. We work for long hours for diminishing pay and benefits. We hold on to a life style that just isn't working for us or the planet. How long do we continue?

Do we continue remaining dependent on them? After all, what is given by The Lord is apt to be taken away. Thus, we are losing benefits while migrant work has become rampant. What is migrant work if not a fancy term for slavery? The chains may not be evident, but they sure are there, especially for the "illegal" migrants, but really for all of us. Then, once we cross the boss' threshold of tolerance, what awaits us? A corporatized jail systems in which the inmates get to work for "da man" for nothing other than the room and board of the jail cell.

What a system that is! Free labor! The silly tax payers wind up paying room and board for inmates who serve as corporate workers. Then those same working class workers fuss because, alongside the inmates, the peasant girls in China and migrant workers from Mexico are slaving hours on end to make the coats they wear and the genetically engineered food they eat.

Then there are the television evangelists humping and bumping their righteous way of being while holding their grubby little hands out for you to fork over pieces of worthless paper we call money. How do they get you to buy into this? Why its nothing less than the threat of hell or the promise of loving salvation that hooks us. And, what do the corporations promise? "Oh, take this drug and you'll be able to be erect just by seeing the twinkle in your sweetheart's eye, in spite of the stress we create causing you to misfire, if you fire at all; or to soothe and make that sick heart of yours operate effectively after being broken by years of trying to make the bills we create for thee; or how about that horrid sense of dreaded depression you feel from being enslaved by us, your corporate Masters. The Prozac company has the "cure" for--and, by the way, the profit from--your depression. "Yes! We are the cause and we will intoxicate you via television and mesmerize you via computerized games so the pain you feel in slavery will diminish. Drink it all in! We want YOU mesmerized, hypnotized and intoxicated!"

Why do we tolerate this? Why do we think that by saving this system we're saving it for our children?

It's because we are enslaved to the externals and think our lifestyle is good for us. We externalize our power. We have no sense of our inner potential. We THINK we need THEM.

Well, we don't.

The first step to realizing this is to understand how much we've been duped intellectually and spiritually. We have been taught to surrender our power to the external. Perhaps this is the meaning of Eve, the woman (the internal) succumbing to Adam, the man (the external) to rule over Her. Yes, our inner worlds are ruled by The Man, the Corporate Boss written at large in all of our lives, taking control of our lives, and our children's lives, from cradle to grave. Even our births and our deaths aren't recognized until certified by them. Even our Beloved God is externalized into some Paternal Monster out there in Heaven (a variant of Eve, Heave) that is willing to zap your backside into Hell for breaking any of the corporate rules (e.g., not giving donations to collection plates).

But what if that power resided within us? Even Christ said that the "Kingdom is within." What if He's right in spite of the evangelistic Bible thumpers preaching from atop a cross-decorated pedestal to deliver his externalized message on the "boob tube?" What an insult to a sacred organ designed to nurture us into growth and maturation.

Think about this from an evolutionary point of view. Evolution unfolds from the inside out, from center to periphery. To see how this works, get yourself a good DVD on pregnancy and watch how the egg unfolds from center to periphery into a baby. The egg's taking form was sparked by the sperm. But, the egg's development is all on her own. The makeup of the baby ultimately is from both mom and dad, but it's the egg that takes form. And, she takes form not from orders from the outside in, but from innumerable interactions between the cells occurring within. Each cell knows what to do, and it contains instructions for being any cell in the body that it needs to be. Thus, it takes form as a specific cell in relation to all other cells in relationship to the needs of the body. Yet, in theory, it could become any old cell in the body. And it doesn't fuss! "Well geeze I could have been a brain cell but here I am placed by Fate Herself into the outer lining of the right kidney....O' Fate, what a horrid condition Thou hast given me!" But the cell had the potential all along and became the kidney cell because that was what was needed by the whole of the body!

This is why you are here on Earth. You exist for the well-being and functioning of the whole. And, by the whole I MEAN the whole planet including people, grasses, trees and polar bears. Don't take this lightly.

The microscopic and reductionist view of our lives is a lie. We unfold in relationship to the entire Earth and to the cosmos above. As Christ came for the sake of the world, then so do each one of us. This is the essence of what is called Holographic Theory in science (see Talbot, 1991). Our bodies and Souls dance in relation to the whole. They are not commanded by a singular God out there but by a non-local Intelligence operating from within here and out there. We operate in coordination with the mind of Gaia (Earth) as well as the universal Mind, which we have very little understanding of via our surface level intelligence. But, if we asked the cell in our brain, we might get some answers. The answers are there within us.

Again, this speaks to the difference between Yin and Yang, Female and Male. The Yin folds inward, the Yang is outward. We need to become more Yin and find our power within. Our bodies mirror the greater whole. Our atoms are in the same relationship to each other as planets, galaxies and stars are in relationship to empty space. Yes, you are in essence 99% empty space. Look into the depths of the starry night time sky and you are looking at yourself in a mirror.

This doesn't matter if you are male or female in body. Both powers are within you....indeed, the "Y" chromosome of a male could just be seen as an "X" with a leg removed. Perhaps this became the penis? Or perhaps the vagina was turned inside out? This would make for a great creation story! A bit more playful and relaxed than the one we have currently in the West. As a side note, it has been mentioned that the term for "rib" in the Old Testament was Ti which also means life. Also, Adamah in Genesis 1:27 was created bi-sexual, male and female (Genesis 1:27) in the image of God. Male and Female universal powers? Seems so!

So, question what you have been told regarding the creation of woman from the rib of man. Many interpretations of myth have a political purpose. Are those interpretations there to empower you or to keep you under the rule of the Elite? Has the Elite deleted your authority and annexed it to its own kingdom?

Thus, in this age, we need to focus on our locus of power. Do we continue to surrender it outwards towards the bosses and political prostitutes they run? We desperately need to redefine ourselves inwardly in relationship to the Earth and the entire cosmos.

This is the beauty of many of the new complexity perspectives of the world that are being professed today. As chaos theory professes, everything affects everything else. What I say in this article has a worldwide, if not universe-wide, effect. Just my thinking about it has an effect. To simplify this, meditate on your breathing. Your breathing, in and out, has macroscopic connections in which you are a necessary instrument in maintaining the atmosphere of the planet. Yes, by breathing in oxygen and breathing out carbon dioxide, you are in a planetary dance with other mammals as well as the plants that breathe out oxygen that you breathe in. Then, they breathe in the carbon dioxide you breathe out! This dance is planet-wide and has been spoken of in writings such as James Lovelock's Gaia Hypothesis.

See the ramifications of this? How you speak to your son prior to his going to school has major ramifications not only for his life, but the life of the planet. In your morning interactions, are you dis-empowering him? Will he go off in bad temper and kick some squirrel across the street? So the squirrel becomes depressed and a cat eats the poor depressed squirrel and two infant squirrels are left to die in a nest. Then those squirrels don't get to live out their purpose in life.

So, you're not wanting to be dis-empowering to others and to Nature at large, but you have bad days. Of course, you're human and not perfect....how do you handle that?

What you do makes a difference. This doesn't mean that if you let out with a loud curse word after you stub your toe and hurt the feelings of some little ole lady that you live the rest of your life in regret. Make amends (say you're sorry) and move on. Legitimately saying your sorry also has its effects. Forgiveness feeds Love. Just realize your actions have major consequences and be as mindful as possible. Make conscious changes.

It is also extremely important for you to take a hard look at your lifestyle. Ask, "how are my eating habits helping my health, the health of my loved ones and the health of the planet?" What you eat and how what you eat is raised have major consequences--not only on the health of the planet or your loved ones, but on you. We are cells in a living organism and the entire organism is reflected in us. Thus we are made in the image of God, male and female as per Genesis 1:27 and several other creation stories. Learn about sustainable agriculture. Turn your yard into a lush garden. Become the new Adam/Eve or Adamah.

The Gaia Hypothesis of Lovelock posits that the Earth operates as a singular organism. How are you supporting that organism in relation to your community? Do you continue to look for the corporations and politicians to change? They're not going to, because they are too invested in maintaining their power at the expense of you and your child. The Earth to them is nothing more than a commodity to be exploited. Dare we say we are raping Gaia? And, in the corporate educational system, are they molesting your child by creating a consumer, soldier, or worker?

When do WE say "no more!"? When do we realize we make a difference in how we interact with the world? How you shop, interact with your yard or property, and earn your living--all these make a difference. What effect are you having now and what do you need to change? Not just for the sake of your own health....but for the sake of the world.

Many Christians have been buffaloed into believing a particular man in history died for the sake of the world so that they don't have to. I'm saying buffaloed because the Powers-That-Be (church, corporation, government) want us to believe this. But, the mystics say otherwise. As one mystic quoted the Scriptures, Jesus Christ says to pick up the cross as He did. Transformation necessitates that we die to who we are in order to give birth to the new. And, the virgin birth mirrors that in mystic teachings. It mirrors it because being virgin is being dead to what you think you are. It is the Mind emptied of its conditioning. Thus, as a virgin forest is one that's intact and hasn't been chopped up, then our Mind in its virginity is whole and quiet. In Buddhist terminology, this is called Nirvana.

This means we need to go beyond our conditioning and merge into the Unconditioned Mind as presented by Buddhists and traditions throughout the world. Or, as Lao Tzu, author of the Tao Te Ching puts it, "be newborn, be free of yourself."

How much simpler can it be?

This process could just as well be a spiritual striptease. Much as the Sumerian Goddess Inanna had to undress and strip herself of all status on Her way to the underworld before She could reclaim Her Queenship in the upper, we have to let go of our conditioning and become unconditioned. It is only by the process of letting go that we can evolve and claim a more evolved state of being. As the Christian mystic, Meister Eckhart, says of the Virgin Birth, "But if that Birth pertains not to me, then what avails it?" In other words, make it apply. (Apply it to yourself; and apply yourself to it.) Get past your conditioning so you and the world can evolve. Your evolution, humanity's evolution, and the Earth's are not separate. We are all in this together.

Burl's philosophy entails the idea that "everything effects and causes everything thing else." His spirituality of Sophia i.e., Wisdom is universal as well as within each of us. He also sees the idea of Chaos as not being "all over the place" but as infinite relationships.

The question I present in my articles speak not so much towards the politicians, but how WE the people can empower ourselves within a planet that is healthy, wealthy and wise.
