Anyone you know been disenfrachised yet?

I know that voting isn't everything, but being a good (i.e., goody two-shoes) American, I really wanted to make the effort and do my duty. At the very least, I wanted to do whatever tidbit I could to ensure that my 'rents and rellies, living in the States, would not have to live through four years of McWhat's-Their-Names' (believe me, if they lose, in one year I will have forgotten) bellicose antics. So in September I Googled "voter registration" and took the first site it brought up (Federal Voting Assistance Program ), printed out the voter registration and absentee ballot application form, filled it in and sent it out to the provided address in Denver, my last place of domicile 24 years ago in the States. It arrived all right. I just received my ballot, and will pay extra to send it in by registered mail. However, my father now tells me that as of about a month ago, and again about three weeks ago, he could confirm my registration at his address, but when he checked again last week, I was no longer registered there. Somthing happened, but I have no idea what. My father also sent me a link to an article in Truthout describing how people are being flagged as ineligible, and it seems possible that anything, from spelling out my middle name to including the four-digit suffix on my parents' zip code, could have triggered it. But if so, then why would I be recieving a ballot? My father, an election official, tried to check further on my status, but has gotten nowhere. I write this as warning to others, but also to elicit a discussion on steps that can be taken to defend one's right to vote.

Yes! (please tell us about it)

I do not want to endorse a parody of democracy by participating in a rigged election.

Apologies for the pseudonym, which I took on to protect the identities of persons close to me whose lives are tragic enough without my clumsy help. It's also a vain attempt to divorce my ego from my writing. If you drop me a friendly line, I'll (more...)
