Alan Grayson
former U.S. Representative for Florida's 8th congressional district , serving from 2009 until 2011.
A wide ranging, hour long interview with one of the toughest speaking, acting progressives, including some very interesting new news.
Rough interview notes
Possible questions, before the interview
What are you doing?
Is the tide turning against the republicans.
Will you run again next year?

Flotilla to Gaza--

Wikileaks

Take on Right wing --
Right wing media--
Tea party/teabaggers

What are you doing now?

Universally, they don't want to solve problems that people have in their lives.

you're
If you have a job, own a home, have a car, if you have social security and medicare
Republicans are actually consciously, systematically trying to dismember medicare

They (republicans) are tools of the filthy rich who have complete domination over their party

There is a division among them-- the ones who actually believe all that nonsense they spout and the ones who only say it to get elected.

Michelle Bachmann believes it, Boehner doesn't.

On dem side-- people actually tried to puzzle out what to do to improve home values, deal with unemployment, actually taking a stab at solving problems in people's lives.

I saw the real tangible, almost unbelievable difference between the two parties.

There are people in the party who take delight in helping out the other side. There are a number "
Joe Lieberman
It dramatically improved the IQ of the Democratic party the moment he left

The republican party disciplines its members.
They have party discipline and we have very little effective party discipline.

There are some people who are under the illusion that if they pretend to be republicans, republicans will vote with them.

many democrats in congress who were disloyal to not only the party but their constituents.

The democratic party is not some kind of club like rotary or lions club. It needs to stand for something like helping the middle class survive. Having home, car, medicare, so they don't have to survive from unemployment.

Progressive taxation is what prevents America from being a society of overlords and slaves. Real wages are no higher than they were in 1974.

According to Federal reserve stats for 2009 top 10% of this country had average median net worth of 1.4 million. Bottom 25% had $1000 net worth. That's 1400 times more net wealth.
It's not the kind of America that people want.

Anatole France-- the

We have what Karl Marx referred to as the reserve army of the unemployed--- 14 million.

We have no government programs to provide jobs.

I don't think that anybody has done an adequate job in creating jobs. Roosevelt created 4 million jobs in three months.

They think they have to destroy America to save it. A Me Lai economics

Was defeated by lobbyists and special interests buying ads by the millions to run dirty, negative ads against me with their sewer money.

We've got Goldman Sachs running our economic policy, KBR running our military policy Exxon/BP running our energy policy.

Our misison in Iraq is to create a 100,000 man army to create a police state to .**** oil.

Afghanistan-- there's no serious prospect that the Afghans are going to say yes, we're happy that you've sent 100,000 troops into the country.

We removed the taliban with 1000 special forces after 911.
After we had actually won, removed the Taliban and thrown out Al Qaeda. Then, with a VP

What you find in the middle is yellow stripes and dead armadilloes
Jim Hightower.

Obama as a leader?
Eisenhower and mlitary industrial complex.
Generals are embedded in the military industrial complex. Most leave military to work for KBR, Grumman, etc. end up cashing in at multiples of their already high salaries.

There's a revolving door between the US mlitary and military contractors.

Advice to progressives:

People with a conscience, with both a head and a heart- make sure you don't cover it up. Be yourself, to your own self be true, as POlonius said in Hamlet. it is an illusion to believe that you can be successful by mimicing the other side.

Need to go back to our roots. 100 years ago progressive movement arose to fight trusts, company towns, etc.

One person against the system is of limited utility.

We need to go back to our roots which are organizing roots. We need to be able to demonstrate to people that we can bring people together and accomplish good things.

We need to make it clear to people that we stand for things.

Supprters of the Dem party felt that the Dems had not accomplished in the face of the adversity we'd been facing.

We need to focus on the fact that the other side is trying to dismantle what is there to support the middle class.

In general Democrats did not do enough to save people's jobs, to save people's homes. People felt that democrats were not delivering, even though, in a large part, dems were not delivering because the Republicans were impeding.

20% of national spending of "sewer money" was against Alan Grayson.

There has been way to much repression on the part of the government to suppress people's rights to speak out, and not just the Republicans...

Fox news approach and his experience.

Libya-- it's simply not our business I don't believe that the fig leaf of NATO action is enough for us being there. Major economic effects. Gas over $4 a gallon because Libyan oil supply taken off the market.

We were imposing a tax on ourselves of $300 million a day because of our military actions in Libya... We are cutting our nose to spite Gaddafi's face.

What we're seeing in the case of libya is half measures. At some point half measures become half assed measures-- to the detriment of Libya and the world.
Napoleon said, "If you say you're going to take Vienna you better take Vienna."

Discussion on Flotilla to Gaza, israeli's right wing government.

There's virtually nobody left in the Israeli government who could be depicted as a moderate, let alone a liberal.

Are right wingers in Israel trying to sabotage Obama's 2012 election
it does seem that every time Netanyahu comes to the US. ..
