A FEW MOMENTS OF CONSCIENCE WITH A DREAM OF CHANGE
As I watched the stem cell research debate in Congress today the ever present threat that George Bush would veto the bill came up. I began reflecting on just how much pain can this mans singularly stubborn behavior be allowed to inflict on the general population?
His obstinate denial of reality and some form of compromise in Iraq has caused ever more pain and death to tens of thousands of people in Iraq and America.
His refusal to deal with global warming in a realistic fashion has set the cause of a cleaner and healthier earth back and doomed many to respiratory disease. He has disgraced our collective reputation as a nation.
His threat to veto legislation to use “spare embryonic cells” for research dooms thousands upon thousands of our fellow citizen’s to Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Diabetes, Cancer, spinal injury and a host of other illnesses.
Then it dawns on me that I have to forgive him for his singular behavior; as I again realize that the Congress and political structure still has failed to reign in the power this man has assumed he has.
Just like parents who hope narcissism will not take over their child if they permit bad behavior – Congress waits!
Just as it happened with Nixon many years ago the shirking of collective responsibility by the Congress along with the voters shrugs have permitted the physics of politics to take over.
As in all nature vacuums are abhorred and vacuums in politics are most often filled by the empty rhetoric of those like Bush with a belief that their personal destiny transcends the every day reality of people who just want to live their lives in peace and hope. It is hope above all that is lacking in our time.
While Mr. Bush is what he is – our vacuous congress has continued its failure to act!
Yes, I know, they are probably waiting for September when the Republican members will begin to defect to the reality that their own elections will be coming next year.
We will surely see a turn of events as they begin to agree with the negative reports that will come out of Iraq that indeed we must wind down.
The Bush support team will depend on the usual lack of memory of the voters to tide them onto reelection.
The lack of concrete action by our democratic majority may allow some blame from them to us! After all the democrats were elected to end the war and they couldn’t. Never mind that they would not act in a conscionable manner!
It is time for Democrats to stop funding! Striking is a method that is both peaceful and effective. Just say NO as Nancy used to put it. Stop all non essential legislation – put the country on notice that politics as usual will be stopped until we start to deal with essential items.
Maybe, just maybe, the people may recognize a Congress that is acting in conscience just as Gandhi would have done. For it is past time that congress call on the people to help master their own destiny.
