It seems that I am shocked every day now when I read or hear about peoples' reactions to things that make them feel threatened in any way. When a discussion begins about gun control, people panic about their guns being taken from them and that the second amendment is being challenged. They cease to read or listen to the whole issue or to see the agony around them, even when the focus of the agony is a murdered child.
Nobody has said ban guns. They have asked and demanded that assault weapons be banned or heavily controlled for the safety of the citizens of the United States. Assault weapons are weapons of war. Single-shot hunting rifles are not the issue when the hunters involved are responsible people... they are not being challenged. We understand their needs to hunt, but game, not people. That is the difference. Responsible people. Assault weapons are used by law enforcement and the military to protect this nation. We have been through 9/11, we understand the threats, we know we have fully trained and qualified personnel that other citizens are not involved unless they are a part of "well regulated" militia such as the National Guard. Each state has them and they are qualified and trained for the purpose of coming to the aid of each state.
If the NRA and its members can only get past their paranoia about gun control and what kind of guns are being talked about, they might be of some assistance to the protection of this country instead of a detriment. Money is not everything and having a senator or congressmen in their pocket is a pretty cheap shot at the average citizens who have been victims or family members of a victim of mass slaughter. Responsible hunters do not have to worry about gun control. People who have murder on their agenda, are severely mentally ill, who feel homicidal, or those who stockpile assault weapons are not responsible. They are the ones a ban would affect.
We are not a nation under attack, we are not a nation involved in internal warfare, so why do we have so many assault weapons on the streets? Why are there weapons being stockpiled? Why is it so easy for someone to buy a gun or assault weapon who is severely mentally ill or homicidal? Many of us do not feel the need to have a weapon nor want one. Many of us have served in the military and have been trained on the use of an assault weapon. We know how they kill, we know what they do and we have no desire to own one or have one around the house, especially if we have children at home.
No, I think it's time for us to do something constructive about so many unnecessary weapons loose on our streets. I feel it is time for concerned members to take that threat out of the irresponsibles' reach. I feel it is the responsibility of the citizens themselves to take the steps necessary to get the job done right. Our political system is corrupt when even our President gets so much opposition from our supposed "representatives". Yes, we still have some responsible ones on our side, but sadly, not enough to win, and that is a sad state to admit.
We must organize and agitate. Organize along the lines of successful efforts such as voting rights in the 60s, MADD in the 80s, and women's suffrage early 20th century. City by city, state by state, and "agitate, agitate, agitate, agitate"- - - Frederick Douglas.
